Right. So: My friend Bread and I have been buddies since 8th grade. We're both musicians and we both have had eternal difficulty finding other musos of similar mind/level to jam with us. He has now decided to play bass for my band; however, we really need to go all-out next year and he needs a good bass double time. The problem is that his dad is not paying $3 000 or whatever for a Music Man Stingray, so we need a cheaper alternative. Another friend of us has a Cort Action bass at home that nobody plays, and we can get that for about $100. My question to you all is: how good is the basic construction of this instrument? Bread is going to pimp the thing with Basslines pups, a Badass bridge, a new nut, and all that jazz. Will the pimped instrument be good enough to last a while (and play some Incubus), or is it complete crap?
Thanks in advance guys.
I'd say it's pretty good, it certainly plays and sounds better than all the basses I tried in the same price range (250#8364; new), including the Squier P-Bass. From what I can tell, build quality is as good as if not better than on some rather more expensive guitars, and doen't make me think of a quot;budgetquot; instrument. The only reason I'd sell mine would be to get an Epiphone Thunderbird, and only then because they look so cool.
Cort basses can be surprisingly great-
Buddy of mine wanted to switch from trumpet to 5 string and we found a new active one in the $350 price range- The body shape was weird and the color was butt ugly sparkley blue-
But it has one of the lowest action, lightest fret actions I have ever played on bass, yet the sound was rock bottom thick, about the same as my active Jbass! It feels like you are playing a heavy bari, but sounds incredible and did I meniton the versatility?
So after 3 years he thought it might be time to move into the $5-700 price range and guess what- Hasn't found anything that will touch that cort-
However, dont know how much modle variance there is-
Cheers
The Cort Action Bass is a very good beginner's bass, and more than that too. The current version is actually 100% identical to the older passive Ibanez GSR200 (they're now active). Might well be worth the upgrade, especially with that pricetag you mentioned. Tried a lefty once, and liked it a lot for the money.
I don't know, My friend uses a cort 5 string bass in my band... cost him $500 and its one of the best I've ever played in that price range, if he'd just mod it a bit if be as good as any other $1500 bass. When it comes to cort, no matter what people tell you, they really are great value.
Bass player in my band has been playing since the 60's. He gigs with a '71 P Bass and plays a Cort 5 string at practice.
