Had my first band practice in forever yesterday, and I found while messing around with my amp and stuff at practice volumes that my DS-1 doesn't really change anything tonally when the volume's up past 7. I get more feedback but that's it, the amp's natural distortion doesn't get any thicker. What exactly is going on here? How can I get more gain?

i think you need an overdrive pedal instead of the distortion pedal. maybe a ts-9. My friend quencho092 has one and it works pretty well. He doesn't really like to use a lot of gain though.

The DS-1 is not a very good pedal, I recommened the Marshall Jackhammer high gain pedal.

Are you looking for a high gain overdrive or something more in the middle? There are many good overdrive/boost pedals to recommend, but you need to be more specific about the tone your looking for.

My first recommendation would be for Xotic's AC Boost.

why not just get higher gain tubes?

Make sure your turning the gain on your amp down quiet low..

Sorry, but 'high-gain tubes' won't make his amp suddenly sound great with the DS-1.

I'd suggest using an OD pedal, as well. Try out the Digitech Bad Monkey if you're on a budget. It's all analog, and doesn't have that nasty midrange hump like a TS.

i was saying as an alternative to using the ds-1 for extra gain

assuming you're leaving the ds on all the time?

A BOSS SD-1 is quite the gain monster when it comes to OD pedals. Very aggressive and hairy.

Hi-gain tubes sounds like a good idea, new pedals would be a second step. Maybe someone can recommend me some tubes for a really aggressive garage sound?

how does your bassman sound? Just curious since a buddy of mine is going to get his hands on one pretty soon-the 68 silverface...

Fenders have a pretty sharp drop in the upper midrange EQ of their tone stack, so in order to get a more saturated tone, you should think about filling this gap with a good ol' TS9 or TS808 or similar pedal. There's a reason why they work so well in fenders, and that's because they fit eachothers' EQ's like a glove-what may sound like a mid hump in a marshall with a TS9 creates an amazingly sweet distorted tone when it's a fender with a TS9.
