My flatmate got a black Burny LP Custom (with Floyd - tried to talk him out of it bu the blasphemer wouldn't listen ) delivered from Ishibashi the other day. It took a bit longer than usual becasue it had a scratch on the headstock and they emailed him telling him about it and giving him a discount for his troubles.
I tell ya what, Gibson has really gotta pick up its game here. It looks exactly like an LP should, even down to the headstock. Nice MOP inlays with only detectable filler at the very top of the fretboard. Great abalone headstock inlay and the binding is absolutely perfect. Heavy but not back-breakingly, and it sounds quite nice (but the bridge will soon be replaced by a Duncan Custom). Sure, there are small issues (the routing for the Floyd isn't straight on one side, the tension springs weren't adjusted correctly and one of the locking nuts was the wrong size) but they can be easily solved.
The big thing for me is the binding and fretwork when comparing it to 3 Gibson LP Customs ('76, 2000 amp; 2001). By comparison the binding on the Gibby's was shocking - truly amateur. And the frets were just as underdone as the Burny. The big kicker for me was that this axe was about US$600, and they gave my mate a discount of US$50 off that for a scratch you'd need a microscope to see.
Don't get me me wrong - a Gibby LP is still one of my dream guitars, but its always good to see a Chinese guitar stand up to one of the big names.
isnt Burny Japanese? Anyways, PICS PICS PICS!!! Sounds like your friend had an excellent score. Hope he enjoys!
I think the older Burnys were made in Japan - the lower end ones are made elsewhere. It had a MIC sticker on it by the headstock. I'll post pics as soon as I rip it away from my flatmate's hands!
MIC?? Made in China?? I hope not....
always thought burny's are made in japan and korea for the lower end models. hmm...
