Hi there.

I'm thinking of buying a trem guitar these days to play metal and 80's stuff. Problem is, I never had a guitar with a trem and I know zip about it.

I'v heard many complaints about Floyd Rose trem, but I always thought it was the best trem on the market. Is it the case?

Are Ibanez locking trem any good?
Should I avoid non-locking trem?
What's the best bang for the buck in the $200-300 market?

Thanks in advance!

IMHO: If you´re only gonna spend 2-300$ , you should really consider saving up quite a bit longer.... there are very few decent guitars under 200$ as is, now add onto that that a good Floyd is another 100$ (wholesale, retail is 150-200 depending on where and color) and we´ve already blown the budget apart and still have a POS

Sound advice... suppose the budget is around $500, what would you go for then? Ibanez RG or S? Jackson?

I quite like the S models with the Zero resistance trem. It's a very smooth unit and the guitars aren't all that bad. Either the 470 (h/s/h) or the 520 (h/h, fancy 12th fret inlay) would be a good buy if you find it within your budget (I'm not entirely sure what they cost in the US). They have a slightly thicker neck profile than the RG's as well.

I like the ibanez S series guitars. There a great bang for the buck. The pickups are the only complaint about them, but that can be fixed easily.

Thanks guys !

Gee, nuntius, more than 3000 posts, I've been away for quite a while! Good to hear from you... I'll try to come back to the clip section more often, I'll be moving my home office down the basement next week, and then I'll have more time to have fun with the guitar.

It's really cool that you guys talk about the Ibanez S... I just saw the brand new Ibanez S470 in ice blue, MAN! I just NEED this guitar! Thanks for the info! It's US$ 479, which means 489 or 499 in Canada (strangely, Ibanez guitars are almost priced the same as in the US here despite the exchange rate, probably because they come from Asia).

Look at this beauty:

Well, I just saw that it doesn't have the Edge III trem and it has only 22 frets. I'd prefer 24 frets... I may go whit the RG350DX in white, I really like this one also. It's cheaper, $397.

Go with the S series with the ZR trem. It's a good trem, and the guitar itself aint half bad. I nstalled a 59/Cool Rails/JB set in one and it screamed with distrotion and had great, lively clean tones in the in between positions.

Thanks Benjy_26, I thought the ZR trem was not as good. I guess I can live with 22 frets. It was love at first site with that ice blue guitar

What I really, really like about the ZR trem is than you can set it up to act almost like a hardtail, which makes string bending easier and string breakages less of a hassle.

Heck, if it wasn't for the big D shape of the neck, I think I'd own one of those S guitars.

Look for a used RG in the 500 series. The trem is second only to an OFR. Great value.

Yeah, this is not a wizard II neck, how is it, more like a LP neck?

RG neck = thin and wide

S neck = slightly thicker and still wide

I just find the S series guitar more comfortable. One thing to note is that it gets thinner around the edges.. not really a problem and keeps the guitar to a nice weight but if you'd prefer to have full thickness all the way through you'd have to get an RG.

The ZR trem works on ballbearings instead of knife edges (like every other FR type I can think of) and to me feels far smoother.

Thanks man, very useful info.

i would go for the S guitar, not only for trem but for the feel of the guitar... the balance is the main thing for this guitar, i dont have one but a friend of mine has a 7 string S guitar and i´m in love with it... the guitar not my friend....!!!

Oh yeah, forgot about that guitar.

If you like the Schecter C series guitars, the C1 FR has an OFR already installed. From what I remember their necks are still on the slim side, but thicker than the Ibanez's. I'm fairly certain they're not as wide as well
