playing or hearing this kind of stuff?
from : localhost/i am conservative but i find this kind of playing completely useless..................................
I think it has its place in exactly the context you used it . . . a human interest thang, one might post in a forum.
But to actually select it from my music collection, to listen to . . . nah.
i find it completely useless
I'm sure some people do. I learned to play during the heyday of the shred era, and was totally into it back then. I'm sure there are guys my age who have remained interested in shred stuff, as well as young kids who dig it. Shawn Lane once said that real high end shredders probably have a special sort of nervous system that allows them to do what they do, and enjoy something so busy and precise. It'll always be a minority kind of thing, but some kid somewhere is burning up a metronome as we speak...
I must admit I probably wouldn't have been into this guy. Too much focus on the chops and not enough musicality. gotta hand it to him though, he can really blow some smoke. The equivalent back when I was a shred kid would probably have been Michael Angelo or Chris Impelliteri. I preferred guys who let their playing breathe a bit, like Greg Howe.
I'd much rather listen to this guy....

I can definitely appreciate a shredder's dedication to the instrument, it takes a LOT of time on the neck to get up to that level of control and accuracy. I'd love to have both of those elements at the level this guy has, I could probably play absolutely anything I wanted

Well, yes and no.
The shred skill-set does make you quite 'able' on the instrument, but it's actually quite narrow. There are certain technical manouvres that are common to Jazz guitarists and people who ape jazz horn players do that are pretty alien to the average shredder. The thing with a lot of the shred stuff is much of it is designed to be relatively simple and shape oriented to play in order to play very quickly, whereas jazz and especially horn players tend to go after sounds and therefore end up doing some very counter-intuitive stuff.
If you look at country musicians, then there are a whole bunch of techniques that are very different to what shredders tend to learn, too.
But aside from pure speed-based technique, there's so much more to playing the guitar that learning to be a shredder doesn't teach you, particularly in terms of articulation and dynamics.
he sucks, he can play faster than any player i have ever heard by quite some margin, but he has no musical mind, i hear duff notes in his jam sessions, out of tune notes, crap bends and vibrato it wasnt very well constructed just a load of rediculously fast scales and runs bunched together and he cant play slow without it sounding messy and it totally bored the **** out of me, he is a super athlete, not a musician.
The worst thing is it's too annoying to sleep through.
Amazingly fast and him live would turn heads. Not really for the music though. Id rather rock out
I don't think the guy actually expects people to sit down in enjoy his quot;songsquot;. I think he just wants to show off and guitarists who can play fast always get some attention no matter how crap they are at actually making music.
im not into this guy but i love shred man , what about old school metallica and justice for all solos are awesome , and you cant generalize man, theres people that like all kinds of stuff , you may find that useless, but for some one else is awesome ,its like for me dimebag (was) is a legend and for my dad was a drug addict ugly lookin useless human being without any musical knowledge !! get what im sayin
I'm like Hot Grits. It seemed impressive at a certain time in my development, but now I see it the same way I do by watching a porno in fast forward. LOL
Rusty Cooley is a joke to me. A purple Ibanez with buzzy action, setup with 8's, into a Fender M-80? Jesus F. Christ! Get a life, for god's sake! hahahahahaha
I like when guys throw some shred in for the solo of a killer song (Dime, EVH, RR) but to just listen to it non stop like that is really . I mean after 30 seconds of it I just tune it out anyway and don't even really notice it happening. There's a thing called rhythm in music. You should really try it out sometime Rusty. I do respect that he has obviously spent a lot of time practicing to be able to do that stuff, but cripes have a little imagination.
That´s not my world. I don´t like his quot;playingquot;, although I´m a shred fan but there are some exceptions. Sounds more like a warm up though.
Well, there's good shred and bad shred. Just like any other kind of music.
i consider myself a shredder(during solos and when working as a solo artist) but this is just boring as hell. i can nearly get to this speed now but there's nothing more to it than speed and i think this sucks.
I am not questioning his technique which is by the way amazing...........i am just saying that i cannot immagine anyone enjoying hearing that kind of stuff...............it doesn't seem like music to me...............it seems more like a telephone that is ringing non stop...........
He was pulling his pud...........showing it off a little. Im no where near that scale....maybe 1/8th it makes me gag. I Love shred in METAL, though the best solos are the one you can hum....like Shine on you crazy diamond! I prefer a player like Gilmour or Cantrell. I can shred and get around the neck though, but it's not athletisism right? it's supposed to be memorable music. Can the guy right his OWN music though and not just go over scales?
WANK WANK WANK WANK
Somehow, I'm hard pressed to even begin to like shred. OK, yeah, it's VERY technically advanced in certain respects, though as said by Hot Grits:Originally Posted by Hot _GritsWell, yes and no.

Shred playing is a VERY narrow path of its own.
I just hear guys like this and say, OK, you can play fast, what about playing actual MUSIC (which requires far more depth, humility, thought and consideration that just merely playing at 19,000 mph) ???? It's as if they never left the bedroom and experienced life. Sad, really.
