Hi there!
I have a American deluxe HSS strat with pot switch, and just got myself a duncan performer quot;great white snarksquot; single coil pickup with which I would like to replace the original built in fender humbucker. Could find neither this particular duncan pick up nor the correct wiring scheme on the homepage.
Do I just remove all four humbucker cables and put the white and black cables of the duncan pickup where the black and white cables of the humbucker have been? Nothing fancy here, just a standard setup.
Thanks for any help and greetings from the alps,
Juerg
I would have thought that you were looking at a standard wiring. Is the switch the S1 switch? I know that Fender use that wiring on single coils as well as the HSS. They might have a schematic to give you a few more options.
Yep, standard wiring with S1 switch. Fender has the originial wiring for download, does not help me much, as it does not tell me how to wire a third party single coil. The original humbucker has obviously 4 cables, the single coil 2. I do not know if cable colours match, both have a pair of black and white cable...
Any ideas?
Thanks, Juerg
I presume 2 of the Humbucker wires go to the S1 switch?
Juerg, here's the problem I see: You're replacing a 4-wire humbucker with a 2-wire single. Much of the functionality of the S-1 switching system relies on having those 4 wires. So, whats going to end up happening is, you're going to lose some of the S-1 switch positions. The trouble is, the wiring diagram for that guitar, (S-1 and a Superswitch), is so hard to follow, I can't tell you if those positions will become quot;deadquot; or redundant.
With that, I believe this will work:

I only posted a link due to the size of the pic. I've also, already taken into account that Fender and Duncan pups are usually out-of-phase with one another.
I hope this works.
Artie
Thanks a lot, Artie! I safed the pic on my computer now, I might give it a try in the next weeks. Your help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Juerg
One thing to know is that Fender singles don't always jive with Duncan singles, due to polarity issues. It may not be as simple as dropping in a Duncan single coil.
Sometimes, you've got to swap the middle for the neck pickups, then reverse the hot and ground leads on the new bridge pickup. That'll keep everything the way it should be, if you encounter a polarity problem. If I were you, I'd pull out the stock pickguard and set it aside or sell it. Then, start over by buying a new pickguard, preferably pre-wired with your favorite single coil set.
Personally, I'd sell the whole pickguard on Ebay, then contact member Lew, and order a prewired guard w/the Fralin blender pot and either Fralin Vin Hots or Duncan Twangbanger/2 Surfers or SSL-1's.

I initially thought along similar lines, although, not quite so elaborate. But if he's swapping in a quot;Snarkquot;, he's probably working on a tight budget.
