I need to setup my strat since I installed a new neck. The nut kind of slides around inside the little holder so I have a bone nut in the mail, should I replace this nut with it? It's a stock Fender MIM strat neck so I figure the bone should be better.
The neck currently has a little frontbow (I don't know if that's the word but the opposite of back bow). I'm about to install a new Fender vintage style 6 screw bridge so I'll need to know how to completely setup this guitar.
Questions:
1. Am I going to need to file this new bone nut if I use it? How do I do that for my stringe gauge (10-52 or 10-56)?
2. How do I know how much to adjust the saddles/truss rod? Will this fix the intonnation?
You should pick up Dan Erlewine's book of Guitar Repair. Yes you will have to file your new nut and you'll need some nut files. Stewart MacDonald Guitar Supply is a good source...you can get the book there too.
You'll get alot of fret buzz if your neck has what you're calling front bow...you need to loosen your truss rod until you have a slight amount of back bow.
Really man: get that book and read up on this stuff. You'll be glad you did.

Almost certainly....
How: from : localhost/How do I know how much to adjust the saddles/truss rod?
Feeler guages /By Eye / by feel
Will this fix the intonnation?
No, only setting the intonation as a very last step in any setup will run the chance of setting the intonation properly
If you don´t even know your way around a basic setup, I suggest Dan Erlewine´s quot;Guitar Player Repair guidequot; before you do anything further..... the only thing worse than a bad setup or nut is an even worse one
I have a little experience in building guitars, never setup one before, should I pay the 50 bucks to get the professional tech in town to set it up or can I do this? I'm a pretty competent human so...

I dunno how a guy can build a guitar and also never set one up...but if you're a pretty competent human you can probably do the work yourself. But buy that book I recommended...it'll be a big help.
Okay sweet, thanks for all the help guys!
Here's the Book: from : localhost/www.stewmac.com/shop/Books,_p...air_Guide.html
Ain't too hard to set up a guitar. I've got a mexican strat with a bone nut. Love it. I broke the original one because the strings were too heavy. Oops. Setup is the last step after you build a guitar. I use Ernie Ball 10-52's primarily, and the guitar plays great. I've also had on 13-56's on the same nut. Sounded great but I broke too mant too fast from bending. Once again, oops.
