What can anybody tell me about these amps?

they are loud, afterall, hiwatts originated from the company. the one i played was real clean, and kind of sterile...not my particular type of sound. I didnt push it too much tho, tho i bet it would break up pretty sharply, it wasnt too much of a warm amp

As an old amp tech friend of mine once said quot;it's not Sound City, it's Sound S-h-i-t-t-yquot; They are known for breaking down and the tone is nothing to write home about. They're pretty much wannabe Hiwatts. They were made before Hiwatt (Pete Townshend used them before Hiwatt came out) and Hiwatt pretty much eclipsed them in tone and durability.

...Gotta disagree with you there Chris!... Sound City's are some of the finest amps ever made!... whether or not they're quot;tone-wisequot;, any better or worse than anything of the same era is purely subjective.....but they were built as solidly as any other amp made...

Hiwatt's are well known for their quot;pristinequot; layout, but it actually lends them to be less reliable than many other's......(absolutely nothing against Hiwatt's!!!, just most of the amps of this era are of quality rarely seen today!)

Considering any amp to be a quot;wannabeequot; really confuses most..(and puts it in a quot;derogatoryquot; light....)..... Sound City's are decent enough that I would grab one over a Marshall SL or Hiwatt in two seconds flat!

...but that's just my opinion...
