Pretty cool combination in the Neck of my Love Rock/Les Paul....I just switched the slug coil out and used the Jazz's instead and went back to A5..Great tone and added harmonics!
I know now that the A5 creates a much stronger field of tone in a pickup even compared to the stock 59N with an A4 magnet...
I've got some of that woofiness back in the neck and I've had to adjust the pickup back down to about 3.5/32quot; from the 3/32quot; I had with the 59N A4 setup...4/32quot; each side was too much and I found the sweet spots between 3 and 3.5/32quot; with this pickup.
For some reason my Jazz/59N Hybrid now reads like 8.5K and I think it was only about 7.8k as a stock 59N pickup before the swap? Weird?
ANyway.....Great note articulation, still reminds me more of the stock 59N A5 but it has a quot;littlequot; less in the lows, nice crisp and clean top end,I'd say the mids are about the same and a bit more overall buzz from mismatching the coils....Again....The thing I do hear right away with these Hybrids is more harmonic content and the tone is tight and very clear.....Almost piano-like when you play clean through this Jazz/59N combination....With gain you get a clear, crunchy, note articulate tone with extra harmonics and singing sustain on leads...(Very cool indeed)...
Is this pickup better than the 59N A4? I don't think it is and it's different, but I do like the added harmonics, and I guess I could do without the extra buzz in my signal...The A5 magnet is very prominent in my guitar's neck position! I was able to get a perfect balance in volume however between the bridge 59B/C A2
though....The A2 magnet can't compete in output with the A5 magnet in the neck.
If this Hybrid was reading below 8K I'd feel alot better about it being in the neck spot....
Jumpmarine's other half of my 59N Jazz/59 Hybrid reads only 7.8K so WTF with the dc resistance on mine(After it's all cooled down of 8.5K)....?????:smack: If this neck Hybrid doesn't do it for me as I test it,I no longer have a stock 7.8K 59N to put back in the neck of this guitar!
I'll spend some time with it.....It has great tone and harmonics and it's only negatives are the slight increase in buzz as mentioned and it's slightly heavy in the lows, but more tolerable and usable since it doesn't get muddy, but stays clean, clear, and tight.....
I could also try the A4 magnet in this scenario and maybe it would be even better or perfect? Bachtorock sought of leaned me to the A4 from the get go!
Is the A4 swap in the future of this pickup?
Why don't you go straight for a full Jazz neck ?
Hey John, if you aren't happy with the hybrid don't worry about me. If you want to go back to the '59n a4, I was very happy with the stock Jazz.

I'd *really* like to hear your impressions of this pickups with the a4 magnet in it.

It's alot of work buddy actually! Tedious and plus I dealt with 2 covers also...
Not sure if I'd want the A4 Hybrid or if I Liked the A4 59N better? I do notice more harmonics and the tone is full, fat, and clear...Something you don't hear exactly with the stock 59N(I say anyway)?
Once you get used to the Hybrid,it's hard to go back to just a stock version of certain pickups! I always hear more harmonics and I really know this adds to the fatter overall tone myself and Bachtorock has explained, plus you do end up with a very note articulate pickup...
The A4 would tame this baby down a bit,but wouldn't the 59N A4 have been good as it was?
I'll just pickup another 7.8k or lower 59N and stick the A4 back in there if need be....It's too soon though and I'm sure the Hybrid will grow on me....
Basically the A5 is maybe just a bit too strong in this guitar in the neck and I have a stock 59N in my Gibson SG and love it...
I think the harmonics you mention are partly why Bareknuckle pickups sound as good as they do, as they use scatter winding processes and mismatched coils

This Jazz/59N Hybrid sounds great! Don't get me wrong guys! I'm just wishing it ended up in the 7.8k or less ranges cause I feel it's kind of powerful in the neck....I've got it down almost flush with the pickup ring and that's pretty normal on most LP neck pickup humbuckers..
Awesome review John. Is there any chance of hearing some clips of that puppy? As soon as I receive my Alnico-8, I'm taking a Jazz-N screw coil and a 59-N screw coil and putting it all in the bridge position for Spewing harmonics.

You may see or hear some clips once I get my Plexitone pedal tomorrow...I can use this guitar on the clips...Neck and bridge..
Bumped
That resistance reading is way weird... did you use a 59 or Jazz BRIDGE pickup?
You should get somewhere around 7.5k with the Hybrid when using NECK versions of the pickups...
Bach, have you ever mixed a neck coil with a bridge coil for a Hybrid? ie. Jazz neck coil with a 59 bridge coil. Talk about mismatching coils. Sounds like an interesting experiment.

I used the same 59N pickup with JumpMarine's Jazz N slug bobbin...Both times I got readings of 8.5K....But....I didn't take the readings from just the leads! I took the readings across a plugged in guitar cable across the jacks and with the volume pot pegged and that might explain the weird high readings?
I know that the Jazz slug all by itself measured 3.85K but I didn't measure the 59N screw bobbin for resistance...Should also be around 4k or less,so maybe I am actually around 7.8K and that would make me alot happier and all I 'd need to do is just go back to the A4 magnet if I feel the pickup is too strong up there, but I do like the overall tone alot Pete!....

I prefer a neck pickup to be as clean as possible without sounding thin, so I shy away from using Bridge coils for a Neck pickup...
Bach I was just mentioning that for certain situations like pairing a neck humbucker with a little more ommph to match a high output pickup like an Invader better.
Would making a neck coil and a bridge coil into a hybrid not be so clean?

My guess is because the coil mis-matches are to extreme to get a great tone.
Man, that sounds really awesome. I'd love to try it out. Great review, John.
Measured this pickup today actually inside of my guitar and at the volume pot and it measures 7.4K ohms.....Perfect reading, but more and more I feel this Hybrid needs the A4 magnet?
It almost slightly overpowers the A2 Bridge Hybrid 59B/Custom.
