I know what a natural harmonic is, but how do I make a quot;semiquot; harmonic ? and what about pinch harmonics now we're at it?

Thank you.

When I think of wave patterns and I think of harmonics, they blend in my mind quite nicely. I have no idea what a semi-harmonic is. Think of harmonics as being the ripples in the water after you've tossed in the stone. It either is or is not, but I do not understand the concept of a semi-harmonic.

No idea....

A semi harmonic is pickhard and slightly graze the meat of your thumb across the string. It sounds somewhat like a failed pinch harmonic. Its the sound you hear around the beginnig of eruption and many other eighties bands.

Okay, thank you.. Do You have any specific sound clips or a video where I can hear/see how it is being done ??

Taphappy is right......kinda like a failed pinch harmonic, where you still hear some of the fundamental note, not just a squeal.

You can practice harmonics by picking the note and letting the string slide off the pick and hitting the left side of your thumb just enough to make a chirpy bell tone.
Move your right hand up and down the low E string to stumble on all the harmonic nodes.

ZZ Top and Zakk Wylde solos are prime examples.

Bingo... apparently Billy Gibbons is famous for those quot;semiquot; harmonics.

A really great example of those is toward the end of ZZ Top's quot;La Grange, quot; during which Gibbons hits a number of them in a row, all varied. I think he plays with a Mexican peso to help him achieve that sound.
