I am putting together a parts-o-caster and I am using a maple neck with buckers...They will be lower output (7.7k, 9k-ish) and planned on using a mahogany body...Since mahoganys grain isnt too pretty, and I planned on leaving the guitar see through finish or unfinished, I was thinking about swamp ash...will it be a lot brighter than mahogany? what would be another good alternative?? -Will
Limba. Mmm.....
It's over all brighter than mahogany. Depending on the piece, swamp ash can be more complex than many people give it credit for. My old Axis was a one-piece slab of swamp ash. It had a nice mixture of bright and dark tones with not a whole lot of mids. I really liked it...kickin' myself for selling it.
Swamp Ash is definitely brighter. It'll still sound really nice though. One of my favorite tone woods. Alder is a good choice too, very balanced.
but tooo bright? I am scared it will be too bright with the maple fretboard...
It depends on what you are going for. My favorite Tele combo is swamp ash and a maple board. It may be bright, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.
If you're worried about brightness, get a thin maple cap for your body.
BTW, a nice piece of mahogany looks spectacular with a transparent red finish.
