Hamer-time....
guitar arrived at work...
I'm not sure WHAT to say...I don't know where to start
I'll have to elaborate in a bit...gotta grab some lunch..
Is it good or bad?
that bad huh?
lol-Mike
You can always send it to me if you don't really want it....lol
you just couldn't imagine a finish being more flawless and perfect...subtle yet striking at the same time!?
Hey Jeff, can you please one-up it with a gibby explorer? i'm curious
and CONGRATS!
No Hoss..it's not perfect...in that sense...
Flat out the guitar is gorgeous...the 3D depth of the wood figure is incredible..it actually looks different from the pictures I posted..flames seem a bit wider...and not...depending on how ya look at it. I've had some pretty nice tops, including a Reed 10 Top. This is just so much better....looks more natural instead of...like ya said..striking..yet subtle....weird. I've had custom longbows that are works of art with exotic woods, and flamed maple lams on the limbs...but again...so striking..yet totally NOT gaudy like a Reed or some of the really figured quilts.
Finish-wise it's not perfect...it has a couple or three minor cosmetic flaws...however they are the kinds of things where ya look at it and say..yeah someone built this thing by hand...it's like my bows...you don't care when it's something like that vs. a sander scuff or routing gouge. ON the 21st and 22cnd fret near the high E..a little bit of glue from the frets being seated seeped out. I suspect I can just carefully scrape it off If I wanted to. The other thing is a pencil point sized dot of the backs paint on the binding right where the binding meets the paint. It's teeny.
From what I can tell otherwise..she's flawless. I've never ever seen binding so well done. Both around the body and the neck binding. Uhm, yeah I admit it.... comparitively...Gibson sucks The best Les Pauls I've had (including Customs and a custom shop model) weren't in the same league. None of the Historics I've looked at are this good, including a hardly used R9 I've had my eye on locally.
Colorwise it actually looks a bit diff than the pic (at least in the light inside my office). It's more chocolately and yellow, but it's still gorgeous. I'm sure in different light more of the red/black will come through. It's very quot;whiskeyquot; and quot;tobaccoquot; or almost a Rootbeer color at times...it changes with just the slightest variation in lighting. The back is like a dark chocolate brown. Thing seems to beg me to play Flirtin' With Disaster (just gotta remember how to play it now).
Neck is exaclty what I'd hoped...rounded like the 50s production LP std neck, but not quite as deep..it reminded me instantly of my old 92/93 Black Standard. Meaty but not a club. It's def rounder/meatier than the bird.
I've just doodled for a min here with it as I damn near don't wanna touch it, but resonance is EXTREMELY good. As good as my McCarty amp; Paula if not better. Natural sustain is very good too, not sure its quite as good as my Paula (didn't expect it to be), but MUCH better than my Firebird. BTW, I'm not sure if it's the balance or what, but even at 9 pounds 9 oz, it doesn't seem as heavy as the faded std.
Frets are perfect...I mean perfect....you can feel the precision...easily better than the McCarty whihc had a stellar fretjob. Rosewood board is perfect and has nice grain. Traps are inlaid perfect with no sloppy glue, etc. POts asre stout but smooth..everything tight..no gaps between pup rings and the body that I can find.
Action is very good, though I may prefer it a touch higher...but no buzzes or anything even with it dang low.
It's THAT good...for looks and construction at least...It makes the McCarty I had look postively homely for construction/detail for $400 less (and NO comparison in wood quality/figure) Hopefully the tone will be there too...won't know til tonight.
Oh and a pair of nice shiney Duncan 59s
good luck on quot;one uppingquot; a Hamer product.edit: exactly what i was suspecting you would say........the local shop i go to carries Hamer and sometimes i go in there and pick one up really give them a look over...theY feel so solid and look so freaking good it's almost unreal.....the quality and intimacy of the layers of the finish are mind boggling...they're usually not quot;Goddyquot; but just right...only in person can you really appreciate the depth perception of it...very cool Jeff!NEW HAMERS ROCK!!!
so u saying this thing is better than a Gibson Explorer ?

Awesome. I knew you'd like it. A couple of things:
1. They paint over the binding and scrape it off. I'm sure it's easy to miss some of it. If you've got a really steady hand, you might be able to scrape it off.
2. About the fretwork, they claim that they don't do fretjobs because their guitars don't need them. I have no proof they don't do the fretjobs, but they sure don't need one when you get them. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
Enjoy it, bro. Let us know how you like the tone once you get a chance to try it out, if you can pry yourself away long enough.

Ahh I see...I got the DVD thing too w/ the guitar..will watch it at some point to see how these things are made exactly HOnestly I wouldn't have the guts to try it on this guitar (not steady at all)

As far as I can tell they are right!....something about they way they let the neck amp; board settle for a few weeks?

I was thinking it was a month or more. Maybe I'm wrong. I know they say it on the video. You'll only appreciate the work involved more when you watch it.
Do you have any pics of it?.....or online pics of a similar/same guitar?
Damn Gibson deserter! LOL
