Johns Bass sound was distorted.... John as a young man back in the 50's had a huge love for that big rockibilly guitar sound.... he picked up an electric bass because he thought that was the guitar sound he heard on records. In the early days John used guitar amps and pushed them to the limits. A little later he used a Bass amp and Guitar amp in stereo and all his rigs after that were bassed on this. He had a Bass stack and a distorted guitar stack. Later in the late 70's John would go on to design some huge rigs with crossovers so he could seperate the freqs to seperate amps and effects. His last rig before he died had a Digitech guitar preamp in it that he got Distortion, chorus and Delay from. His Sub bins were a dry bass signal but his other cabs had lots of effects.
Simple answer to you question is yes i believe you hear Johns lead bass playing much more then Petes Acoustic. Been a while since i put on the original studio track.... Pete Townshend used to say that John was the lead Guitarist in The Who.

I agree. I listened to the track when I saw the post.
When I saw Peter and Roger as the Who in 2004 it was great music but it just wasn't the same without John's lead bass coming through.
Thanks guys for your posts!
i read an interview with entwistle right before he died where he stated he was actually using a guitar pod to get part of his distorted sound. he was using the marshall simulation on it. he was running to 3 different rigs. can't remember what the other 2 were.
never foget as a kid leanring that pinball wizard power chords were bass- turned my guitar (and bass playing) around!
I've done that.....sounds killer. Though the bass amp it sounds like a bass, but through the guitar amp it sounds like a detuned guitar. Combined it's extremely thick.
