I actually never tried the 5150 Peavey head but people say it is good. I can't seem to find the 5150 on peaveys webpage, it seems like the 5150 head is now called 6505. Anyone know if it is the same amp and just got a new name or something...is the 6505 as good as the 5150?
And a general question: what peavey head would you recommand for higain metal sounds?
it is the exact same head with a different name...when Eddie Van Halen left Peavey, he also took the 5150 name, because that is his copyright...so it has a new name now..but it's the same amp!
I think either the 5150(6505), the XXX or the new JSX would probably be the amps to consider for high gain. some artists that were using a 5150, switched to the JSX when they stopped making them.
the amp is indentical to the 5150. The 5150/6505 is THE best stock high gain metal amplifier for that sound, especially in that price range.
I'm not a metal player but if thats what your looking for you should definitely give a listen to the XXX - very heavy sounding amp.
It is the same amp. If you want a high gain amp it is about as good as it gets from Peavey, but I would try the JSX as well.
if you want a thick heavy distortion sound go with a XXX
if you want less low end and a bit more top end bite go with a 6505 or 5150 (used)
if you want something sort of in the middle, go with the JSX.
that's the best simple way to describe those 3 IMO.

And I assume the 6505 Plus is actually the 5150 II in new clothes?
Correct, the II is the
I haven't tried one since the original model, but I found the 5150 to be kind of one-dimensional.
The XXX, OTOH, has gotten great reviews, and my bro.-in-law loves his.
Yea i actually played a XXX 212 combo the other day.. i only played teh clean and crunch channels but i was very impressed with teh crunch. The clean channel was decent for a metal amp but the crunch channel sounded great.
Crunch channel gt; every other channel. I can't believe the Ultra channel is considered the 'high gain' channel. I only use it for leads, and use the crunch channel as my main sound.
With the EL34's in it and running at 60 watts, it's one of the best blends of american and british tone, IMO.
