Title says it all, pretty much. I'm looking to switch out the JB in the bridge of my RR-1 (maple neck thru, alder wings, ebony fretboard, OFR). I was going to go for a Custom, but the Demon has caught my eye. I'm looking for a little more thickness and less of a high mid spike than the JB has, but I want to keep the clarity and good lead tone.
Has anyone tried the JB and Demon in the same axe, and can you compare them?
Yup. I think you'll like the Demon for awhile, but once the novelty wears off, you'll be back to the higher output realm. It happened to me... twice
If you want thicker than a JB, go with a Custom, rather than the Demon. It's actually similar to a Custom 5, but without the balls.
You mean all scooped out like the C5, and then even more balls taken away? That would SUCK.
I'll try it sometime, no doubt, but who Know's if I'll like it.
The custom does NOT have less balls than the C5! (IMO)
It's just more aggressive... you get more crunch and mids with the custom than you would with the C5...
I've never tried a Demon but I sure really really like the custom... It's a great aggressive pick-up with still some PAF flavor.... I think you'd like it....
I'm assuming you've tried a DD?
I think the Demon is similar in ways to a JB but, I find it to be more harsh with more piercing highs. Needless to say, I didnt really care for it at all. The custom would treat you right though.
Get a custom, it´s exactly what you´re looking for
I'm playing a Demon in my Dinky in lieu of the JB I had in there previously. Wow, you know I'm no good at this, but here goes...
I put a demon in my Dinky several years ago expecting my speakers to melt. It didn't happen and I was disappointed, and replaced it with a JB, which I really liked. Then after awhile and after learning lots of stuff thanks to the wonderful folks here, I decided to give the Demon another whirl.
The Demon takes some getting used to after having the high-output JB, as the Demon is fairly middle-of-the-road. I had to use a little more gain through my TS9 to get the sound I wanted, rhythm-wise. It took some getting used to for sure. If you're looking for a gain monster, look elsewhere.
As for tone, I do prefer the sweeter tone of the JB, however the Demon definitely has better articulation for pull-offs, etc, and I think has better harmonics. It's a little janglier and more open sounding than the JB also. I think the JB is definitely the more aggressive of the two, while like the ad says, the Demon has less bite and more growl. As for cleans, well it's sort of a wash in my opinion. I'm gonna stick with the Demon for now as it is different than all my other guitars, and since learning to get it to growl like I like, I've come to like that setup, and besides I've got that Distortion loaded Soloist if I really want aggressive.

Yup. I really liked it for awhile, then I swapped it out for a Distortion for sh1ts and giggles, and I'm convinced that I'm a high output pup guy.
Speaking of the Distortion, have you tried one of those in the RR1 yet? It's but a magnet swap away...
he doesnt like the distortion these days....dunno if hes tried it in the RR, but he says he cant stand the DD
I just put a demon in my petrucci. Overall this pickup is 'meh' but it does have a different sound to it so i'll probably keep it. Demon sounds pretty crappy through my almost no gain/ 30w marshall but pretty good through my duoverb 4 12. The pickup only really shines when i need to cut through the mix of 2 guitars/bass but alone it can sound fairly harsh. You should probably go for the custom.

Heh, too true, too true. I have, infact, had one in my RR-1, and I found it a bit too bright/shrill for my tastes, as well as a bit too over the top. I can't belive I just said that, eh?
I'm going to go with the Custom!
get a 59
Alright... EX, JB, I ****ing hate you guys!
I just put the oversized ceramic in the JB for ****s n giggles...
It's staying. I really liked it, I'll give a full evaluation tomorrow. I pulled the lead, which is kind of short, too hard and pulled the ground wire off...the pickup died about 15 minutes into testing.
you cant fight the DD, its inevitable
do not fight the DD, least you become one...
demon wasn't hot enough for me.. ideal for metal rhythm! leaves a wicked notch free in the mix for a JB, DD, custom or something..
