I'll be buying a new tube amp soon. I miss my Traynor YCV40 to a point you can't imagine
I tried many digital devices and amps thinking these would be more suitable at home with kids, to no avail. So I got my self a tech 21 GT2 for silent practicing and recording. And I'll buy another tube amp because I can't live without one anymore
The problem is that I hate EL84 tubes, so that eliminates a heck of a lot of small amps. Now, before going directly to Traynor again (6L6), there' s only one other amp I'd consider, the Carvin MTS 2X12 or head. These amps are amazing in that you can tube them with 4 6L6 or EL34 or both (Brian does it at with JJs). And you can also switch power between 50 or 100 watts. Now this is really amazing versatility.
Does anyone ever used or tried one?
I liked the cleans on the MTS series, they have good high end shimmer while still retaining a very muscular low end. I have issues with the gain channel, though. It's a bit too fizzy and compressed for my tastes. Maybe running a lower gain tube in the driver stage and using EL34's instead of 6L6's would take care of it, but I did'nt get a chance to do any of this on the one I played.
Thanks Benjy. That's what bothers me with Carvin, I can't hear it direct. They have good sound clips, yet, it's not like the real thing. I know there's a money-back guarantee, but I'd have have to pay to ship it back.
And I can get a used, mint condition Traynor easily at a very good price here, since they're made in Canada, they're quite popular.
Anyone else?
They are very good amps. I own a Carvin Legacy and I like the MTS too. They do sound different than most other amps, but for the price they ask, you can't go wrong.
Yeah, that's what I think... I want a good amp, not necessarily a Marshall clone. Carvin's are much cheaper than Marshalls... my budget will help me decide
