I just picked up my MIM strat with a vintage tremolo. I thought I could live with the screws on the saddles, but after I set it up, I realized the screws just plain bother me - they are uncomfortable on my right hand. Stew Mac has several replacement saddles, three of which look nice to me - all graphite ones, ones with a polymer insert, and locking ones. All of them look like they would be comfortable due to the fact the screws don't stick up so high. Rather than grind down the screws on mine, I figure replacing the saddles would help the guitar to stay in tune better, and also would be more comfortable.
So, has anyone had good or bad experiences with replacing vintage saddles? I just can't see it being a bad idea, given you could drop the old ones right back in if the replacements don't work out.
i had the same problem...i use the graphie ones from all-parts..they work great. I can't see any downside- it didn't change the sound in my guitar, the strings stay in tune better, and it is a lot more comfortable.
