I'm just soldering it up in the guitar, but was wondering if it was normal for the resistance to change with a magnet swap. The PG measured 8.2k with the A5 mag and now reads 8.5 with the A2.
It should read the same! Is there any change in temp. such as using a hair dryer to re-set the wax? Temp. changes do change the resistance of pickups!
Yep....Heat raises the dc readings...Check it later when the temp cools again.
Just played it a bit, while it does sound warmer than the A5, tight, focused and generally good. The eq just doesn't sound right for this guitar and it's lost some of the woodiness factor to it's tone. To my ears the hybrid 59/Custom has been the closest to what I've been looking for so far. I'd like to try a regular '59 in it now.

What about putting the A2 into the Hybrid?
Thanks guys, other than a slight temp change while holding the magnet in my hand. It should have been room temp. Who knows, I'll test it again when it's out of the guitar.
I just might do that if don't mind me opening up your pup.

If you know what you're doing,I absolutely don't mind! Now I Know I'll never get my hybrid back! LOL......At least if and when it does return, you'd have already done the swap back to A2 and with my A2 magnet to boot! Cool....
Well, I tried the a2 and I think that I prefered the little stonger a5. Go figure......The a2 sounds very nice but it's almost too scooped in the mids now. The A5 had more mids that would cut through more easily.

Seems it should be the other way around? The A2 should give you more mids and a softer, sweeter tone...The A5 should be tighter, stronger lows, maybe slightly more highs, very slight mid scoop compared to the A2.
That's what I thought too, I'll have to give it some more play time to get the feel of it now.

I always find that the A2 gives me a tad more in the mids and an overall sweeter and more touch sensitive tone....The A5 makes things tighter in the lows and the tone is more up front....
If you have both hands touching the probes while you measure the resistance of the pickup, you will get a slightly lower reading (0.2 to 0.3k lower is typical) because the current is paralleling through your body.
It was a strictly hands off reading: Alligator clip on the ground and regular probe for the hot held down on the non conducting table top.

As stated buddy....The total resistance values go up slightly when you heat the pickup up....I always take my readings with alligator clips on both leads and with the leads disconnected from anything...
When I swap a magnet,I loosen the strings, insert a small 2x4 block of wood that is soft with masking tape under all strings at around the 21st fret area ,remove the pickup, lay it flat across a towel, dremel tool the cover off, loosen and remove the magnet....I then reverse all of this and it takes me like 10 minutes...I place a peice of masking tape across the slug side of the bobbins, push the cover all the way down, then lightly clamp the cover and resolder it....Put er back together, tune up,and set the height again..
You guys were absolutely right about the eq'ing. What I was encountering was this:
My Vox was dialed in on the mids for the Jazz neck which an a5 and scooped in the mids naturally so I compensated by upping the mids on the amp. When I first installed the A5 Hybrid I didn't have to adjust the mids and it blended perfectly. Now when I reinstalled the hybrid with the a2 the pups eq was reversed somewhat and I hadn't adjusted the mids on the amp yet making it actually sound more middy than I would like. When I dialed down the mids it really opened it up and sounded nice. But the dilema now is that in order to blend the best to my ears, I need to have both the bridge and the neck to have a2 or a5 mags in them. Just for convenience sake. This would be so I could switch back and forth on my 3way switch without having to change the eq on the amp. Does this make any sense at all. I'm reading it back and it kind of sounds as if I'm hearing things wierd.

I'm starting to feel as though I miss that Hybrid compared to the A2 59B,so don't get too comfy with it buddy! Bachtorock is right when he says the 59B is a bit light in the girth department....The 59B is cool, but the Hybrid 59B/Custom I Like better...My bridge position pickup is missing something and now I fully understand what it is....Take your time with it though and learn from it.It's a very cool pickup indeed.

Did I predict this would be the outcome or what?
Once you try an Alnico Custom/59 Hybrid, nothing else quite compares!
John... after you get a Hybrid back in your axe where it belongs, you have to try the Jazz/59 Neck Hybrid... it's pure tone heaven...
I'm going to put the a5 back into the hybrid to double check if my theory is correct. I do know one thing after all of this swapping around.....I love the A5 Hybrid the most of any of my bridge pups at the moment.

Pete.....Yes my friend you were right....I do like the 59B/C Hybrid in my LP....Do you like the A2 or the A5 though Pete?
And yes,I'll also get a Jazz pickup and make a neck Hybrid out of that to try..
