Hey guys, I really love the voicing of this Fender Atomic Pickup, but when in Flat and Drop tunings then the Low E becomes muddier than I'd like it to be.
Now would I go about getting better clarity out of this thing barring a custom rewind? I'm not knowledgable about raising and lowering poles so if that would do it could someone please explain.
Lower the bass side of the pickup so it's further from the strings. That will descrease the magnetic pull on the strings and should clear things up a bit. Play with it until you find the quot;sweet spotquot;.
As ErikH said, lower the bass side. You could also raise the pole pieces to compensate and follow the curve of the fret board -- that should make it clearer and give you good balance across the strings. Experiment and listen closely.
That and use less bass and more mids and treble on your amp. Your bass player will appreciate that too! (laugh!) Lew
Raising the pole pieces in general will emphasize the brighter of the two coils (by virtue of it being closer to the bridge) and will add some clarity as well.
Lowering the bass side of the pickup will help too, though the output will be slightly decreased on the bass side.
