Well... a few months back all the other quot;popularquot; guitars got appreciation threads... figure it's high time for a Jag thread!
Just noodling around on my jag... I can't believe the amount of different sounds I can get out of this thing. And how cool they are. Even with stock pickups.
Most people hate em (Lew ) but I like em.
Things I like about the Jag-
-between the strangle switch and rhythm circuit, you can get anything from mud to ear piercing highs.
-best clean tone EVER.
- tele twang and strat glass at the same time
-short scale neck: not as different in the real world from gibson scale as most people think... I have big hands and I can still fret all the way down. I can just stretch more.
-feedback from noisy switches means I can scare away cats with my feedback
I can forgive the lack of sustain and bridge problems and I never use a trem so most of them are gone anyways. It's just so unique... I urge anyone to try one
You'll probably hate it but it might be the sound you're looking for
classy men play jag
anyone with me?

I am with you. I am a avid Jag/Jazz fan, i've just never had the funds to buy one, but i really want a fiesta red 60s jag. Nicely relic'd of course!
DB, It’s interesting that you started this thread tonight, as I was looking into the old Jag/Jazz threads earlier in the evening. I’ve never had the pleasure of Leo’s “improved” breed, though I am keen to try one. A US made Jagmaster would certainly be tempting…though I would ditch the hummers for some singles.
Any classy men want to chime in
I used to have a 64 Jag and a 65 Jazzmaster.
The main problem with both of them was keeping the strings in their saddles. Because of the angle the strings break over the bridge, there's not a lot of downward pressure on the bridge. It wasn't until years later that I found out there's a nifty bar that attaches to the trem plate that effectively moves the angle over the bridge about 4 inches closer to the bridge.
As far as sound with them- I'm a Les Paul kind of guy. Both the Jazz and the Jag were too quot;politequot; for my tastes. The slide switch selector with the roller controls were about worthless. Both guitars had fantastic feeling necks. I preferred the Jazz, but I don't think I'll ever get another.
I love me the Jags amp; Jazzes, friend has a real nice Japanese Jaguar in candy apple red, beauty to play, electrics are a biatch though!.
Jags and Jazz's rock. Its the only way to get that 'old'cure sound. To get the new sound, just get a schecter ultracure with the 2 59's in it ( since when they went guitar driven in 87, they pretty much used gibsons). I would love a jag and a jazz from the 80's with a roland chorus. They are just so musical, melodic and spirited guitar. Just listen to the solo on 'A Forest' or Jumping Someone elses train.
Here's one Jazzmaster that goes to eleven:

He's the main reason I bought a Jazzmaster. I too am a Les Paul guy and always shy'd away from single coil guitars. But when I saw Mascis rip the sh!t out of his I HAD to have one. I'm almost positive he uses a Gibson Tune-O-Matic bridge one his JMs.
Paul guy here. But the Jag is something else. As for the bridge... it pays to use high guage strings (I use flatwound 12s). Bending is harder, but it's short scale so doable. Golden, you're talking about a quot;Buzz stopquot; which increases sustain. I prefer mine without the stop personally... the way the notes die out so early on the jag can create some cool effects. Also get the bridge as low as you can. Raise the saddles.
The big problem is the way the bridge rocks. It's the stupidest ****ing bridge in the world. But I wouldn't have it any other way. It's not real if you put the TOM on it. Some people put electrical tape on the bridge polls to make it stable.
I have no problem with the switches really. I play around them. ain't an issue
hehe... yeah, it's polite but it sound great with fuzz.

I've always found Jags and Stangs to be pretty ugly, but for some reason I really dig the Jazzmaster. It's got a really cool body shape, and I love the tone from those huge pickups.
I've been toying with the idea of building a mahogany 3 P90 Jazzmaster for a while now.

SWEET! If your doing 3 pups then I'd put the P90 in the middle and the Jazzmaster pups for the bridge and neck.
I'd love a teal Jazzmaster... If I go to Japan for work again, I'm buying a Fender there for sure, not sure if it'll be a strat, tele, or jazz though...
Jazz's are nice... too normal for me
Plus they look to plain with none of the chrome.
I want a Mustang. Jag Stangs are ugly though

I appreciate them...but I don't have one. You guys aren't going to kick me out are you?
