Well, I thoughtmy Nashville Tele was done. Vintage '54/Tex-Mex Strat/Mini-HB. I have it wired with 2 volumes - the normal one for the bridge and/or middle, adn the ex-tone pot for the neck HB volume. I made two discoveries:
1) When combining pickups, quot;mixingquot; with the two pots doesn't work very well.
2) Though I've never had much use for tone pots, I was listening to Johnny Hiland's CD today. What he does with the tone pot is amazing. In quot;Orange Blossom Specialquot;, it sounds almost like a wha.
So, I'm thinking of going back to the standard 1 volume/1 tone setup. But what value tone cap? The MIM Tele originally had a .027uF. Duncan's instruction sheet says 0.05uF. Can someone who has played around with differnet tone caps clue me in as to the effects of different values? Can someone who's heard Hiland's album hazard a guess as to what value will get me his quot;whaquot; effect?
Hi Rich-
I've been messing with that myself. My MIA Tele came with a 22 and i've put a 47 cap to get that wah effect. Lew told me that that's what Danny Gatton used and I liked his stuff as well as Arlen Roth's. The word is also that a metal film cap will be less fizzy and more toneful than a ceramic.
You can get any orange drop you want at allparts.com

My local place had a choice of .039uF orange drops or .047uF mylar. I stuck the mylar in there for now. It sounds good and gives the quot;whaquot; sound I was looking for. I'll change it out for a orange drop next time I order amp parts from Mouser.
Thanks all for your comments.
Yeah, when I used to post on the Telecaster Discussion Page, I think it might have been Joe Barden who told me Danny used: .047. He liked to use his tone pot for a wah wah kind of effect....like a the dopplar effect of a lonesome train whistle.
I think it was Joe...or maybe I just read it in a Danny Gatton interview.
Personally, I like .02. It leaves more mids in the signal when I turn the tone knob down to get what Eric Clapton called quot;Woman Tonequot;. LOL!
I use Orange Drops too. And I use the tone cap soldered to the two middle terminals of the volume and tone knob, like some 50's Les Pauls were wired. Seems to help retain highs better when I roll down the volume control for rythym playing.

I just got some Orange Drop 0.47's and I'm diggin' wah effect. Jumpmarine and I swapped pickups-his Vintage Broadcaster lead for my JD and it's been a fun change with a new cap and pup. Feels like the first time!
The price you would pay at allparts for the orange drops would be way more than buying them off a dealer.
