need some help here. i recently bought this 70's MIJ jazz bass, made by some random company called Star. It looks just like a fender except the electronics are a little funky. It has what appear to be two humbuckers, and for controls there are one vol, one tone, (both very scratchy) and three switches. My original thought was that they were coil taps and a pick up selector, due to the humbuckerish appearance of the pickups; however, the outter two seem to act like boost switches and the middle as a mute.

Now comes the problem, while they sound great on the higher 3 strings, the output is halved for the low E string. I tried adjusting the height on the pickups but it did little for me. The pole positions seem to be slightly to the right of the strings if you look down on them.

Does anyone know what kind of pick ups these are and what I could do to replace them? I'd hate to spend a ton of money and lose the great vintage tone this thing puts out. I attached a pic of the bass for anyone who wants to get a visual on it.

Thanks!Sweet axe.

I vote for just ditching the switches altogether if they are giving you problems.
