Hello,
I know that Stewart MacDonald sells a knob removal tool but I was wondering if anyone here has a trick method to removing Les Paul speed or bell knobs without damaging the finish?
Thanks!
Shoestrings! Seriously. Wrap around and pull up brotha! Voila........
use a thick cloth and two table spoons. Put a cloth on the top of theguitar - so You don't dent the finish. Then put two table spoons one from each end under the knob. Push down gently on both table spoons at the same rate. Carefully slide off the knob.
Yup...shoestrings work great, just loop under the knob and pull up. Also, take a t-shirt and work that under the knob, twist and pull. This keeps the knob from flying across the room if it's super tight.
When you put them back on you can take a pair of plyers and squeeze the posts slightly so it' easier to take the knobs off again.
Thanks! Sounds easy enough! By the way I like the KISS pandas too!
I asked the same question to my luthier, and he grabbed my Goldtop and pulled the knobs of with his hands
humbled my a$$
Dental floss also works.
If you cant just pull it off with your fingers, take a soft rag and carefully slide it under the bottom of the knob. Get as much of the rag under the meat of the knob as possible on two sides, twist the rag so it doesn't slide off and pull up to lift the knob off. Stubborn knobs may require slight back and forth motion but be careful not to pull too far sideways as the knobs can break. Also, if you are pulling real hard it is possible to pull the shaft right out of the pot so again, be careful. Peace -Frank
