I realize that guitars are usually tailored to a particular music style, not all of which would utilize an odd shaped guitar, but do you think there's a cuttoff age, at which it looks inappropriate or even ridiculous to be donning a V, Explorer, Rhoads, Kelly, BC Rich Mockingbird/Warlock/Rich B!tch, or other strange shape?

I was going to do a poll, but I'm just curious to hear what people have to say.
27? 30? 35? 40? 45? Past that, and I'm convinced you'll look a little ridiculous holding a Washburn Dime, Bengal striped ESP star, or red flying V!!!

Is there a cutoff age?

No cutoff age. Albert King played a Flying V up until the end of his life and he sure didn't look or sound bad.....Joe

There are some guitar/player combinations that just look ridiculous period. Man Albert King and Lonnie Mack always played Vee's and looked tough as hell. I don't know it is kind of more the person than anything IMO.

i think the Gibson V and Explorer can be pulled off by almost anyone but the crazy jackson pointy Vs and other crazy shaped guitars like the dime razorback and such should have a cutoff age lol.

good question...i think vintage explorers/Vs will look cool at any age...i mean look at the edge for an explorer example and maybe both of the schenkers for Vs...

that being said...i think if you're ok playing it than play anything you want...no matter the age...

It's not so much the age, but how the person handles age. Slash would look perfectly normal playing any of those guitars, but someone half his age - let's say the dude from some pop band - would look rediculous.

Billy Gibbons still plays pointy guitars but you have to admit he'd be cool if he played a broom with pickups.

yeah, i could never be seen playing a bc rich....

It's kind of like a car too-it doesn't look right if you're a lawyer driving around a souped up civic with bright green graphics and 20 inch wheels. Some guitars look classier, like a strat or les paul always looks classy and fits any occasion, even if it's beat up or has a crappy finish.

Nah, there is no such ting as a cutoff age IMO. Play whatever you like.

As far as BC Rich guitars and washburn dimes and such, I grew out of those when I was like 16. I think they look ridiculous no matter your age.

As far as V's, Explorers, etc. They are timeless and can be used by anyone without looking silly.

There are some people who would look ridiculous with those guitars at the age of 20. Others who could carry them off at 60 . Whatever the defining factor is, I don't think it's age.

Let's face nobody looks right driving a bright green civic and 20 inch rims!? That's gonna take some serious bodywork hacking to fit in the arches man.
And with guitars it definitely depends on the person some people are just naturally old gits.

Absolutely agree. Really it mainly depends on the music you play, your general stage presence etc. Slayer are still playing super strats and BC Rich Vs etc. Its all about character and being able to pull it off.

I hope there isn't a cutoff age. I'm pushin' 37 and I just bought my first V...a Dean '79 reissue.

I would say NO.
Lynch is 50 and still plays his trusty Tiger, lots of performers in their middle years play Vs, Explorers, polka dot or stiped guitars.

Maybe there should be a cutoff age for spandex.

I don't care how old I get, I will play my Moderne forever! I want a Rich Bich too ! I think it just depends on the player...if you can pull it off and not look stupid, go for it...if it sounds killer but looks stupid...do it anyway!
