I'm a bassplayer so i haven't tried any pedal on guitar but what low priced OD pedals do you like stock?
The Boss Super Overdrive(SD-1) does sound good stock, although when Stratdeluxer97 modded, it is a first class killer pedal. Think Tubescreamer with a more articulate tone, no low end loss and wider range of gain.
Boss DS-1 is my fave.
Vox Valvetone kills, but I think it's discontinued.
Anybody try those $15 Danelectro FAB Pedals? Or the Pastrami?
Boss SD-1, MXR ZW-44, Tube Screamers, the list goes on and on and on. Then, there's always the DIY way.

Lew; did you actually mean DS-1, as opposed to SD-1? The only reason I ask is because I have a DS-1, (Spina-less, at the moment), and its a Distortion pedal. Do you use your DS-1 as an overdrive?
Thanks;
Artie
IMO the best LOW cost OD pedal that still sounds good is a Boss SD-1...new they go for $50.00. If you shop hard you can get them cheep...I paid $25.00 shipped for mine! They do have a slight hump inthe midrange, they do have a bass cut off but for the money they are hard to beat...plus after you get some more money you can get them modded buy John, Analog Mike, Robert Keeley or if you feel like trying it there are tons of DIY mods for SD-1 on the web...
Tubescreamers are cool too, but IMO they cost too much new for what you get.
The Boss DS-1 is cool, it has much more gain that the SD-1 and the same mod rules apply to it as apply to the SD-1.
My personal fav dirt box is a pro Co Rat...that said there are lots of different versions so you should be a little careful when looking for them. These pedals also have far more gain that the SD-1/TS-9 type units
The MXR ZW-44 is pretty much a modded SD-1 so again, same rules apply

ArtieLew uses his MIJ Ds-1 for overdrive, Distoprtion and even as a boost!
Digitech Bad Monkey.
Thirty bucks and the stupid thing has relegated my TS9, SD-1 and all other pedals to the shelf.

1000
I tried one the other day with my amp and it was just as good as my Ts9. Why shell out 100 bucks for a TS9 when it's right here? The best product Digitech has out there, hands down.

Wow, from the Quencho that's big endorsement for the Bad Monkey...And I thought you were Mr. High Head-Room Clean-Tone. I may have to buy one now because Quench likes 'em so much.

Cool. I'll have to play with mine a little more before I send it to the quot;Docquot;.
If you're talking about your lead tone, don't try to save yourself $50.
I know there's a few cheap pedals that sound OK, like an old RAT or Guyatone OD-1, but you're getting quot;OK tonequot;
You're better off, scouring the used ads, looking for a $200 OD, that someone is letting go for $100-$130. When you've got a killer thick lead tone, you'll be glad you didn't try to save $40.

Hi Artie, I meant the Boss DS-1. That's the one used by Steve Vai and others...especially Joe Satriani who uses/used one alot to overdrive his Marshalls. It'll push an amp into overdrive easily and I often use one with my Fender amps.
It also cleans up beautifully when I turn the volume of the guitar down to about half.
I think of it as being an overdrive unit and not a fuzz or distortion device.

I swear by the Digitech Bad Monkey. Awesome crunch sounds that bite and growl while staying smooth. Works best with nice open sounding tube amps like a Fender Bassman.
anything that can put out louder than what goes in with reasonably clean results can be used as an overdrive IMO..i've used mixer headphone outputs to play with crunch tones before! wasnt exactly connissuer tone, but i was bored
tom
1 for the sd-1
never tried the bad monkey so i have no opinion of it
