Would you rather have (2) average $2000 Standards....or throw the whole cash pile down and have the very best Gibson Les Paul ever made, a $4000 handmade Historic 59 loaded with your favorite Duncans?
Pleeze, I wanna hear from Gibson LP lovers, not comments about worthless copies. Keep in mind, this is your lifetime player guitar, not to put in the closet.
Two Standards you could buy at any GC, or 1 of these that cost top dollar? Also, if you're a Fender lover.....2 American Standards, or 1 Custom Shop of your choice?
Always playing live, I'd rather have two guitars so I'd have a backup handy. Always playing in a studio, then just one really good guitar would be preferable to having two good but similar guitars. Of course, things are really inbetween those two...
i'll take 1 custom shop strat built to my specs.

GJ, could you outline the differences between the Standard and the Historic please?
I don’t go in for multiples of essentially the same guitar. I tend to end up with a clear favourite- and the other will get neglected. Each guitar must bring something different to the table.
Hence I’d go for the one über Historic. Make mine a plain top ‘59 in iced tea!
I'd go for the two Standards, as long as I could play a few and choose the ones I want, and as long as I could replace the pickups, pots and caps. There are great production Gibsons out there and I'd rather have two guitars than one.
Much as I would like a Historic if the opportunity arose, I wouldn't trade my current 2 production LPs to get it.
I´d go for the 2 standards as long as I don´t have to buy them from MF/GC/M123 or similar
I'd go for the hand made historic.
If it was gonna be a guitar for life, then I'd want a real good one
ill take a custom shop strat over 2 amercian standards.... but I shall not comment on the LP historic since I haven't played any yet.
I would choose the 2 standards. That way I could set one up with a sweet pup combo and one with a Rocking combo. (I currently have a sweet combo in my studio and wish I could afford another to set up aggressively)Plus, I baby my guitars and if I have one thats too nice and too high dollar, Ill be too afraid to play it or take it anywhere. Also, Ive never played a historic. I cant imagine it being that much better.
I've played my fair share of Gibbys and the custom shop really is head and shoulders above the rest that they produce. After my RI 0 (arguably the most quot;economicalquot; of them all) LP Special DC, I can say without hesitation I'd take a Historic model any day over two standards.
It all really comes down to just how well of a standard you can find. Some are duds (like the cherry sunburst one I had a few years back... some of you guys may remember) and some are great. There's the same thing with the custom shop, but it seems like the number of good guitars is much higher than standard production models.
I'm pretty much hooked onto Historic Gibsons now. They are expensive, but if you buy from a reputable store, I think you'll get what you pay for (atleast in my experience). They are pretty much the top of the heap and I'd take a really fantastic guitar over two quot;goodquot; guitars.
Oh yeah, in the future, one of my goals is to purchase a RI ES-335 in tobacco sunburst

I've spent some time w/ an R9 (and other historics) lately. R9 is a Pretty guitar. Not worth twice the $, IMO...it may be twice as pretty, but doesn't sound twice as good as a nice Standard. and the necks are way too big for me...much bigger than the 50s neck I had on my CSB Standard.
Historic and Fender Custom shop without a doubt....
I'd go for the two standards as well... provided I can pick 'em from a pile and grab the two best souding/playing ones....
I'd definitely be going historic and custom shop as well...
I'm a big fan of having two of something, don't get me wrong, but once I have one of something that I really love, I'll never look back....and that's the way I'd be probably with a historic les paul and a custom shop strat. I love my studio standard and my american standard strat...but they are just standard
I like the big, well shaped neck. Since Gibson started the option of what neck to have and started making the headstocks the right shape and size, the Standards have gone up a notch or two. I can't say that I've played any quot;newquot; LPs in the past year or two, but I'd imagine they're pretty close to the ones I've played since Gibson instituted the changes.
Still, I'd rather have an 8.5 lb R8, with a nice subtle top rather than two Standards. Tone Turds or QC issues are going to come with every type of guitar, but I think the liklihood of getting a Tone Turd or a missed QC issue go down exponentially with a CS guitar.
2 LP Standards handpick by me. one outfitted with PAF-type pups for awesome cleans and another with a more agressive pickup combination for distortions.
I'd go for the hand made one. I personally think it'd be ridiculous to have a $2000 guitar as a backup... unless I was signed and had boatloads of cash, then I'd have a $4000 backup!!!
I'll take a Custom Shop Strat to my specs. I love Les Pauls but not as much as Strats.
