How can I tell if the Vintage 30 in my amp is Chinese or British? I looked at the back of it and I don't see anything that would indicate where it's made. Ideas?

no sticker? or label or anything?

a picture could help a little

but AFAIK, the original celestions have a sticker and label at the back

Looks just like this:

I don't know of a way to tell British from Chinese manufacture either. Celestion tried to keep the move to China as quiet as possible so don't expect to find a a big quot;Made in Chinaquot; sticker.

You might try to e-mail Celestion themselves, they're usually pretty helpful. If that doesn't work email Dave at Avatar speakers, I'm sure he'd be able to tell you how to spot the difference.

FWIW, my Greenbacks have a quot;MADE IN ENGLANDquot; stamp on the top of the mag cover

I have heard, not witnessed, that side-by-side they are pertty much the same soundwise.

I bought a set of Rocket 50's and they sound ok.

I've heard that as well, don't know about the truth of the sound or if the reliability is the same.

The reason I really want to know is that I'm tossing around the idea of replacing it, and if I'm gonna sell it on ebay and it's a Brit I'd like to be able to take full advantage of that.

My Avatar 2 x 12 cabinet say Made in England. I was glad to see this.

mine say made in england. if you don't see that somewhere then they are probably chinese

If I remember correctly, it's hidden somewhere on the speaker, it's not on the back sticker. Look on the frame or near the magnet or something.

I´ve witnessed the popposite.. the chinese ones are muffled and lack a bit of tightness to my ears.....

That said the move of these speakers to hina essentially causes me to boycot the entire Celestion line... I avoid chinese products like the plague for moral reasons, and there´s nothing else Celestion makes that sounds good IMHO

It MUST be on there somewhere otherwise Vintage 30s wouldn´t be allowed into the US IIRC

I haven't exactly looked carefully. I haven't even taken the thing out of the amp! Any idea if a known British V30 would sell for more on the bay than one that's unmarked?

The ones in my Mesa Recto 4 X 12 and Marshall 4 X 12 have quot;Made in Englandquot; stamped into the metal basket around the outer rim.

I got a GB a few months ago, I had to look pretty hard, but there was a tiny sticker on the side of the mag that said Made in China, but in side by side comp with an older GB, I couldn't hear any difference.

I thought I heard (for what that's worth...) that the G12 series, and the real x-pensive blue-colored/alnico magnet speakers; are the only ones made in the U.K.

^That was the impression I got too, but apparently there was a large leftover stock of Brit mades left over.

Or maybe we're completely wrong.

V30's for Mesa are made in UK. All others for several years have been made in China. The Vintage RI's used in the handwired Marshalls are also UK made along with the Blue. All others are China mfg'd.
