Plus the 4X12 cab which are both in great condition.
I've only played through it once, so obviously I'll give it a few goes before I decide anything (especially b/c it's so big). Anyway what is the skinny on these heads?

They Rule.
BUY IT!!!!If it sounds good...
Tonally a cross between a late 60's metal face and a early 800 series amp...
brighter than a plexi...a little smoother than a 800
I had a 2x12 JMP 50 watt combo, that I sold..that I really regret..it had 6550s in it, and I didn't like the tone when it was supa cranked...Guy I sold it to later re-tubed it with El34s and man that amp sounded friggin incredible....
Think late 70's hard rock sounds...crunchy, ballsy, but not quot;metalquot; tones of the 80s... Kansas, April Wine, Late 70s Thin Lizzy....late 70's era Scorpions...those types of sounds...
APRIL WINE.................Holy crap, haven't heard them in ages!!!!!
They rock Luke....which model, do you know?

I'm going to have to get some better ones of her undressed.
A shot with her bottom off- check out the size of the tubes on that baby!

If you wanna see a huge set of caps...
That's an old 600w Bass amp.
What tubes are in the Park????
Blue Tesla EL-34s.
Luke, does the one you're looking at have 6550s or EL-34s?

Tesla tubes made with blue glass. Basically the same thing as the JJs, but with blue glass. I'm still kinda trying to hunt down some nice Mullards for this thing. The only other set of tubes I've got for this amp are a set of EHs. They sound about the same- I'm not preferential about the sound of either- but the Teslas are a bit more quot;novel, quot; like the amp itself.
i own a '79 50w JMP and i'll be honest with you if you play Rock well, it rocks but if you want more gain for 80's 90's and modern metal or punk or even some heavier alternative you are looking at the wrong amp. unless you want to use a pedal in front of it or have it modded. i just bought a soldano hot mod for mine (replaces a preamp tube and adds another gain stage if you didn't know) to see if i can get more growl out of it since i hate using pedals in front of it. also they do not sound all that hot at low volume, they can be very thin until you start to crank them so something like a hot plate would be a good idea unless you can crank it at all times. overall they are cool amps but they also have some drawbacks (none that can't be solved with a pedal or a hot plate though).
here is mine with the original cab....

Luke, the skinny is they are fat heads. GET IT !!!! I'd love to have one just to have one.
TGB...why must you torture us with those pics?
Thanks for the thoughts guys!
I'm not exactly sure of the model right now, I hope to head over in the next three days, or maybe this weekend. I'm going to carry the Non Signature signed EJ strat, and the ole Heritage along with my SD pup booster, and SD-1 over there. When you guys say that it needs some juice to sound good how MUCH juice are we talking here? I haven't moved out of the ole city yet....
Also how DO they respond to pedals, are they frequently modded, and if I decide to get it should I buy it planning to mod it? Remember I've only played this thing once, and with a strat on clean settings. Also I've never played through any other JMPs. My Marshall exp. is JCM 800 (side by side inputs) JCM 900 (early model I think?) DSL 50, 71 super bass, and a plexi RI.
Thanks a million guys!
Luke
The combo I had liked the Wah, OD, amp; Delay pedal just nicely.
Mine had 6550s, so it cleaned up really nice, which made the reverb work well with it.
Good luck, have fun....and show some pics when you bring it home!
A good point of reference for the tone is like early Cult or AC/DC....about that much gain.
The good news is that those amps are never going down in value, only up, if they're stock and in good condition.
I'd definitely recommend retubing it with 2 JJ E-34L's and 3 GT12AX7C's. Don't mod it, but replace any weak components like old caps or resistors, if the amp is hissy.

You say it so matter-of-factly!!
I will if you'll supply the NOS tubes!

Even some of the non-ballsy ones are ballsier (is that a word?) or more gain-y than most AC/DC stuff or even the Cult stuff up to Sonic Temple- that sounds very JCM 800. It does those tones nice, but it can get a bit more gain-y.
