I´ve been thinking of putting a HB in the bridge of my forthcoming custom telecaster. So far I´ve thought the custom custom would be a good choice, as I want the bridge to be fairly hot without being over-the-top, and I don´t want it to be too bright either, as the alder body/maple neck is gonna be quite bright already.

But recently I´ve read a lot of posts where people seem to be quite unhappy with the CC, describing it as ´honky´and too middy.

So how is it in your honest opinion, is the CC any good or is the midrange simply too much?

I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but a Custom 5 in the bridge of my Tele-clone is my current favorite sound in my favorite guitar. Just the right amount of twangy-spank, without being harsh, or piercing.

I imagine a CC might be even a bit smoother.

Let me qualify my remarks by pointing out that I play through a modeller, purely at home, using a Peavey Tele-clone. Might be an quot;apples and orangesquot; thang.

I have a CC, and I love it...the only quot;complaintquot; I have ios that it can be a tad too compressed but...I do like the tone a lot!

It depends on the guitar.
The CC has a buttery bottom and aggressive highs.

I have a CC and I love it. Sounds incredible when split too. It would sound awesome in a tele. Go for it! Plus, If you dont like it, I consider it a good building block pickup that you can say quot;i want more this and thatquot; if you dont like it and us here on SD forums can help you choose. But I definitely think you will like it. It's not too honky. Plus, dont forget the 21 day return policy.

I'd have to disagree that it has quot;aggressive highs.quot; I found it to have a somewhat rolled off treble response compared ro most Duncans. To be honest, I didn't like it at all. It was pure midrange, no low end at all. If you have a really bassy setup with scooped mids, I could see the CC working well. Overall, I don't like any of the three pickups in the custom series, but I seem to be in the minority on that one.

I'm with Artietoo. I think you'd be happier with a C-5. It just has a bit more tightness and snap to the sound. The CC would sound good too, but might be a bit dense sounding. You'd very likely enjoy either of those in your guitar. Also, make sure to check if your tele bridge dictates that you use a TB-14 or 11 tremspaced version, so the poles line up with the strings.

Does the standard CC fit that kind of bridge or should I consider a tremspaced version?

IMHO, The CC works best in the bridge of a Strat.
For a Les Paul, I recommened the C-5 or a JB.

you guys forgot to ask foo something...what type of music will you be using it for for the most part?

i have a CC in the brige of an alder maple/ebony strat and i play mostly metal and heavy punk for the most part and the CC is killer for that (and much more other forum members and friends raved about it when they tried my strat for blues and clean stuff also) since i play with the mids at around 4 or so on my amp the big mid spike of the CC fills in the gap and makes the sound much thicker yet not as mid focused as if you just turn up the mids on the amp...it's a bit hard to explain but either way the CC is perfect in alder if you want a bit of a fatter sound and not and icepick like edge.

Let me make sure I have this right, the CC is a custom with an Alnico 5 magnet right?

Dr. X, I'm pretty sure it's an A2 mag.

I have a JB in the bridge spot of my Tele and I love it!!!!! Yes it may be a little bright but so is any Tele bridge pickup. It sounds great clean and distorted. I use a 59 in the neck which on it's own kind of dark but the middle position is beautiful.

the only compliment... IS NOT THE LACK OF BASS, BUT THE KIND OF BASS. IT MUST BE A TIGHT BASS!!! THE Ccc bass is flabby

Leads and comp. Of course it would be nice if the CC could do the Scofield tone too. But most of my gigs are with a top40-band and the idea behind the guitar was that it would be versatile (but still a bit different) for that use. I mean, p90 in the neck for cleans and mild overdrive/distortion and a bridge HB for more distorted stuff. Of course I want the bridge to sound good clean too but it´s going to be played mostly with OD/dist. I´m also thinking of putting in a push-pull pot so I could split the CC.
