Im buying a blues jr, but i was wondering how its quot;natural tube overdrivequot; sounds, will I need a pedal? what pedal would you suggest? maybe a OD-3 or a TS-808?
I want a classic rock tone.

im not a huge fan of its natural overdrive i think it sounds great clean and benifits alot from overdrive pedals. A TS-9 and SD-1 would be a nice comination, you could look into getting them modded by john. who is a member on the forums here.

although you could theoritically use a foot switch to switch between clean and fat settings, I prefer the with the fat switch engaged, and the master volume high, so I'd also go with a pedal

most any tubescreamer would work great. the Maxon OD808 is particularly notable, or maybe the Sparkle Drive like John The Modder recently tried

I love the tone of my Blues Jr. with the power tubes overdriven - that's what the Weber Mini-Mass is for

For me, the quot;Fat Switchquot; is pretty useless 'coz the tone when it's off is just thin. YMMV.

Lately, I've been fooling with the Visual Sounds Route 66 (TS-808 clone on the overdrive side, with a compressor/boost on the other side) and/or a DS-1 modded by Mr. Spina. Works nicely with the Blues Jr.

There've been a bunch of threads about Blues Jr.'s here, and I'm feeling lazy so you might do a search. The stock speaker simply needs to be replaced IMHO.

Chip

P.S. My only real beef with the Blues Jr. is the relatively lame reverb. Oh well...

thanks guys,
I might get a used TS-9 and mod it myself to TS-808 specs.

So replacing the speaker makes the quot;overdrivequot; sound better?

and leave the fat switch on?

replacing the speaker makes the AMP sound better, period!

I leave the fat switch on with the master up, because that's where I get the best tone for me, but you should experiment and decide for yourself where you want your volume and EQ. One nice thing about this amp is that with a full tone stack, and the two volumes, you have a fairly decent amount of versatility for a small amp.

What kind of speaker do you guys recommend putting in? I was also thinking about getting a Blues Jr.

I use a Jensen RI C12N; others use various Celestions - V30, Greenback, G12H30, and others use Webers, like the ceramic Blue Dog. if you decide on a Celestion, you might check the Hellatones at Avatar Speaker.

I feel the natural overdrive is nice when I'm bluesin' out a strat, but as for some rockin' overdrive I'm gonna go with the Maxon that Curley Mentioned. A personal favorite of mine.
BTW I also am seriously buying a Blues Jr. in the near future.
