hi, is the marshall jcm900 any good? i play metal mostly and i have heard this thing kind of only does hard rock - metal. ????

The one i am looking at is a 50 watt combo with one 12quot; celestion speaker.

I would try it out first if you can. I know the high gain master volume heads are great for that type of music especially if you get the ones with el-34's. I think the high gain versions are great for metal. I heard that dual reverbs have a more buzzy type of distortion.

I'm with greendy on this one. As you can see from our signatures, we both own a JCM900 High Gain Master Volume amp. The difference between mine and his is I have the MkIII and he has the SL-X (or MkIV). The SL-X has one additional tube in the pre-amp giving it more gain than the MkIII. Great metal amp but you need to find one with EL34's. The came with 5881's most of their lifespan due to the availability of EL34's at the time. The MkIII's came only with EL34's.

The head model numbers are 2100 for the 100 watt and 2500 for the 50 watt. Go here, from : localhost/for more info on the JCM900 models. I also have a page dedicated to the MkIII models, from : localhost/The combo you want to look for is the 2501 (1x12), or maybe even the 2502 (2x12).

Erik, nice site (yours). Got me thinkin.

Seems like the interest for these amps is getting bigger.

I have the 2500 MKlll myself, as you can see (and as most people here already know)

Thanks. Got G.A.S.?

I'm debating on making the Marshall page it's own section away from the DIY section. Not sure though. I'd have to update a few links in some threads though to keep them up to date.

Best part is that they can probably still be had relatively cheaper compared to the earlier ones.

Yeah, definitely more modern high gain sounding. They can go from 800-ish sounding with the gain down to screaming high gain with it turned up. Check out the clips on my page to get an idea of what it can do.

Watch eBay. I've seen some MkIII's for really good prices.

That's pretty doggone heavy. Of course the song selection suits me just right, too!

Got a POS 4500 with 5881's....one day I'm going to torch it

You must have heard the Priest clip....haha. I just moved my Marshall page to it's own folder, added a couple pictures, made the sound clip links be to the mp3 rather than a zip file, and added a little localized navigation. Different colors too.

Don't do that. With the power amp schematic you should be able to reconfigure it for EL34's. It'll sound better afterwards.

Hehe have done so already...did not like it either...it is just so far from any Marshall sound I like.Give it away instead of ruining it, Rid!(I wouldn't mind an amp more )

Heh nah we use it for tests...if the pedals can sound somewhat useful on that amp...well..hehe

Wow, thanks ErikH, your links were extremely helpful, and i have definately become more knowledgeable because of it.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

What stock Tubes does the JCM900 comes with ?
I saw one with 6L6 on it, this is written on the Tube itself, so I can'tbe wrong

They came stock with either EL34's or 5881's.
