Hello, I'm interested in updating my guitar's pickups, mainly just cos i reckon it'd be fun. I've got a Yamaha Pacifica 112 with the standard pickups, a Marshall MGFX30 and digitech RP100A effects pedal. I play heavy metal (system of a down, metallica), as well as blusey stuff (white stripes, led zep, clapton). Any advice for pickup setups? Ive got no idea about the different seamour duncans. Thanks in advance
Think that's a bridge hum and 2 scs? Alder body?
I'm not a metal player, but I will give you the blues side and maybe others can cross the other direction..
Just put a JB in the bridge of a maple nightfly and was really inpressed at how well it splits with the middle pup- Over all it's very clear and lots of defintion, but crunches very well for classic or EVH sounds- A bit bright on maple, but if your's is alder you should be OK-
I have no clue about metal, and I love humbcukers in sc rails, so I would personally go with a vintage rail in the middle for the claptonesq stuff- The cool rail was a bit hot for me, but might be a better comprimise considering your metal interst- PRoblaby OK for blues as long as you intend to overdrive anyway-
Beyond that, hot rails would problaby be too hot for bluess, but then again you may be on the more aggresive side of the coin- BTWm I use the DMZ cruiser in this position and it's superb blues pup-
In the neck I probably cant help you at all- Not sure at all what would work for metal and for blues?
Can't wait to hear how things turn out!
i have a pac112 as well. i dropped a sh-4 JB in it and it kicks ass. havent tried any other SD in it.

the pac112 has a hum/sing/sing pup config.
hey cleanshirt , go to the member list and PM Rainmaker. he has a pacifica too and he has more experiece with SD pickups in it than me.
i'm currently using a H/H axe and not playin my pacifica anymore.
IIRC he got a duncan distortion and cool rails in his pacifica.
hey guys, I'm overwealmed by the quick response and high quality of response. Seriously, thanks to you all! I will pm Rainmaker soon, this hot rails/cool rails sounds good, ill have to check it out.
Once again, thanks a bunch!
The JB might be a little thin for metal, especially since Pacificas are probably a little in the thin side tonewise to begin with.
One of the Custom series (Custom, Custom Custom, Custom 5) would probably do the trick for the bridge. Texas Hots for the single coils.

yup, i agree its bright. thats why i play alot with the tone knob when using it. for some stuff (not metal) bright can be a good thing.

Thought I had made a mistake at first with the JB because it is very bright, I have a 250 pot, and I often have to roll the treble off-
But the more I use it, the more I find classic rock opportunites where I open it up to get about the most detailed humbucker powercord sounds that I've ever had and I've decided that the tone pot is a good thing for a change-
But again, no idea how it would standup for metal
Just dropped hotrails into my start and have to say that I love it so far. Play both heavy rock and blues. It's a goodhot, versatile pickup. What you can achieve will also depend on what you surround it with.

Custom/hot rails/cool rails.
I seems like the JB is a pickup that half of everybody loves and the other half absolutly HATE! I am a Hater!!! One of the worst picks I have ever played.
Those are just my opinions, good luck on your tone quest and welcome to the forum.
I use a Jb bridge / jb jr neck in a pac112L..... play heavy distorted riffs on the bridge and clean bluesy stuff on the neck...
