ok its really starting to get on my nerves, ive changed the high e string about 9 times in the past week, it WILL NOT stop breaking ive checked the nut ( graphite ) doesnt seem to be anything cutting it..i've checked the sadle ( tom/stp ) i dont see anything there, i've looked at the tuner..nothing off normal. i dont know what the hell is the problem but if someone could point out something i might be missing fire away please.
Have you determined where it keeps breaking. The usual culprit is a burr in the saddle. The quickest, remedy is to take one of the broken E strings and run it thru the saddle, back and forth, to smooth out the burr. If that doesn't work, you can take it to a luthier to sand and smooth the saddles, or you can replace the saddles with graphtec.
Try taking a piece of gray fine grit sandpaper and wrap it around a B string, then rub it through the slot.
If it's not the guitar, you may have to try to lighten your touch, and start by using a medium pick, and picking softer. On my strats, the problem of string breakage was solved by installing Graphtech Stringsaver saddles. They also make them for Gibson Tuneomatics.....I'd probably get the Tusq version, so the mod is hardly noticeable from a distance.
My customers often come to me complaining that their guitar is breaking strings. I tell them that it's they who are breaking the strings, they're just using the guitar to do it
Seriously, yer man Jeff_h isn't far off the mark. I find that with the cheaper Tunomatics the string digs into the crap metal. It's not so much a burr that causes the breakage as the pinching effect of the saddle. Opening the slot out so that it just cradles the string should do it and you may want to jack up the tailpiece to reduce the break angle over the saddle. I had a lot of trouble with string breakage on Gibsons a few years ago and i foound that replacing the Factory notched saddles with new ones which weren't notched fixed it.
