In an earlier post i asked for humbucker advice after trying a duncan custom and it making my guitar sound muddy. I got some very helpful advice and even a dimarzio recomendation(thanks for your help ranalli!!). I talked to someone at dimarzio and after much consideration and tone chart readings have decided against the D-sonic. I figuered that with the problems i had with the Sh-5 I was leary about it, it just seemed likley that in that guitar i could be making it into a mud machine. After trying the JB i am going with the SH-6 for the bridge. I think i might however like the right Dimarzio in my guitar. I have noticed a lot of my favorite lead players use them but i am not trying to get any ones tone per say I just want an awsome lead tone for legato phrasing as well as speed picking. I tend to use the bridge pup more for rythym and the neck pup more for solos. The guitar is a guild blues bird. Which is like a les paul only with a non F- holed chambred. I like the specs on the PAF pro and the PAF joe. Any advice on this would be apprecited including other Dimarzios than what i just stated. Oops almost forgot this will be run through a mesa/boogie dual rectifier road king. Thanks a million and god bless.

Well, I LOVE my humbucker from hell in the neck position.
it's got somewhat of a single coilish sound with a humbucker's power, so it might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I think it would be worth a try.

I use it with all levels of distortion/fuzz and some pretty speedy stuff, it can definetly hold up.

Rock ON - kac

DiMarzio actually makes my favorite neck pickup so far... the Air Norton. It should fit your needs very well.

I'm getting either a AN or PP on the neck and Steve's Special on the bridge. I will get which ever has a quot;ROUNDERquot; tone, for the neck.

I used to have an ibanez rg770 that i had an evo in the bridge and a regular norton put in the neck. So what is the difference between the norton and the air norton?

Copy and Paste:

Airbuckers are full-sized humbuckers that contain a gap or space between the magnet and the polepieces. The distance is quite small, and may be filled with nothing but air or by some non-magnetic material. The purpose of the gap is to lessen the magnetic field over the pickup, which in turn lets the string vibrate more freely. This results in a purer, more open sound and improved sustain.

The other purpose of the “air” design is to reliably reproduce the performance of vintage humbuckers (1950s and 60s), many of which contain magnets weakened by age and mishandling. Weakened or quot;agedquot; magnets are inherently unstable, and therefore cause unpredictable performance. Airbuckers utilize stable, full-strength magnets, yet the magnetic field is the same as produced by an quot;agedquot; magnet, thus offering the performance advantage without the unpredictability.
Thanks fret burner for the info much appreciated it is!! I would still like to hear about the PAF pro though as the Dimarzio site says it has a sound wah pedal in the middle of its sweep. Yet i wonder how this will sound in a rectos modern channel as these amps have a very ditinctive sound and as i have found not all pickups work well with the amps frequency response. You all know what i mean, there is no mistaking the modern channels sound. Any wisdom would be appreciated. Also, is it likely that i will experience phase problems running a Duncan and a Dimarzio in the same guitar? Not that this is a big deal but would the cream part of the bobbin on a black/cream Dimarzio match up color wise with the cream part of the bobbin on a cream/black Duncan? I want to keep with the zebra and reverse zebra color scheme if possible, otherwise i will just order an all black Dimazio!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!

I have an Air Classic in my Yamaha RGX neck position....sweet, full-bodied, but very defined and clear too... it's quite quot;airyquot; for lack of a better word

That's the only Air bucker I have tried, so sorry, can't help you on the other Air models...

everyone seems to love the air nortan for the neck, the evolution is a nice lead neck pickup too.

John,

I just installed my Steve's Special and Air Norton on my RG350DX. I will write a review after the gig on Friday.

If you're not in a hurry, you might be interested on what I think of it

I have a Super Distortion in the bridge of my RG750FA and a PAF Pro in the neck. It's a great combo. The SD is solid and thick and the PAF Pro is open and sings awesomely with high gain. They both mix well with the single in the middle.

Check the plain old DiMarzio PAF. I have on the neck of my Charvel 750XL (Maple top, mahogany back) and it just totally sings. Amazing tonality.

As far as using a Dim and a Duncan and phasing, if you're just using a 3 way switch and no splitting or anything, just swap the the red and green wires on the DiMarzio and they will be in phase.

I find the PAF Pro to be more vocal sounding, and the Air Norton to be more tubular or round. I also found the Air Norton to be just a tad tighter overall.
