Hoping someone can help me.
I live in Nashville and I recently bought a pick guard complete with Duncan Pickups off E Bay to put ion my ’79 Strat.
All the Pickups are Jr. size so they fit in the original single coil slot. The pickups are set up as follows: Duckbucker in the neck position, Hot Rails in the middle position and a JB Jr. in the neck position.
The guy who sold me the set up did the original wiring, and it was really bad – so I got some schematics off the Duncan site and rewired the whole thing. Originally it sounded pretty good but a bit weak compared to some of my other guitars with similar Duncan pickups – so I took the guitar to a guitar tech and asked him to check everything out and correct any amateur wiring errors I had made. When I got it back, the neck and the middle pickups sounded GREAT, but now the JB sounds kind of muffled and dull with not very much high end..
Can anyone think of what might cause that? The tech is supposedly good. He indicated that he replaced a capacitor so that the tone controls would work properly for the neck and the middle pickup – just as they did on the original wiring configuration. The JB appears to be unaffected by the tone controls but is still dull.
Any advise or assistance would be appreciated. Obviously I’m going to take the guitar back to the guy that worked on it, but I would like to have some idea of what might cause this before I go and talk to him.
Thanks
Tom
Try and check if the pots are 500k, 250k pots are the standard for single coils. The 500k pots should open up the high end.
Hey Tom,
I'm a fellow Nashvillian as well. Who's the guitar tech? I need a good one and if this turns out well I may use him for some mods of my own...
By the way I agree with greendy, the first place I'd look is the pots.
Good luck man!
