So I just got my new American BC Rich Mockingbird today. It has DiMarzios in it. A PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge. THought? Comments? I've only had two guitars with DiMarzios before and wasn't thrilled with either however I have no idea what those previous guitars had in them. I have ordered a Duncan Custom for the bridge and a Jazz for the neck to replace the DiMarzios but at the same time I'm trying to do a compare and also looking for things you all have noticed that maybe I haven't yet or should in contrast to the Duncans.
So far my impressions of the DiMarzios are they're not horrible. I always had this impression that they sounded like someone left the wah pedal about half way up. I like the crispness but it doesn't have the beef I want. The sound good but a bit too overdriven, sorta like an EMG. I gonna continue to play with them as it will be a few days before I get the Duncan replacements and can get them in.
Any thoughts or opinions welcome.
i've found that the more i play SDs the less i like dimarzios. They seem too lifeless and compressed for me to like them. I've tried the Air Norton and the Steve's Special in various guitars and they sounded lame no matter what.
Well the Duncan Custom is going to me more crisp and less beefy than the Super Distortion. The SUper Distortion is a fairly dark and meaty pickup.
If you like em, keep em in....if not swap em out.
i tried the hs2 not intentionally in my strat in the bridge. i didnt like it. it sounded weak. it might be for someone but not for me. i didnt even choose this pickup. my guitar teacher was setting up my guitar and told me the hot rails i gave him broke, so he put ina dimarzio he had instead. i was upset. i still think i should give dmz humbuckersa try, i was going to get a 59b/a2pro sd set, but i think ill try the evolution/humbucker from hell set. or i might get the air norton instead of the hfh.
I have a Super Distortion in one of my RG750's and it smokes.
I have a clip if you want... pm me you e-mail and I'll send it. It's only about a 250k mp3
I also have a PAF in the neck of my Charvel 750XL and it's very nice and smooth... Very tasty...
I'm actually surprised that you don't like them. What is it that's specifically wrong with them?
I know that the TZ, a very nice pickup IMO, has that wah-feeling. I like it, but if one doesn't, it's really not that possible to dial it out.
there is NOTHING wrong with that specific dimarzio set you have
as a matter of fact back in the 70's early 80's it was thee pup SET to use in your guitar everyone and thier mother was putting in dimarzio's(super D and the paf)
I like an old Super Distortion I got in a box of parts I bought. It measures out at 13K and has two conductor wiring. I also like the FASt Trck 1 amp; 2, but only as bridge pickups. I also liked the VIrtual Vintage Blues/54/ Solo combo I had in my strat. They didn't sound as quot;strattyquot; the APS-2's I have in it now, but they did sound good clean and driven.
Every other DMZ I've tried seemed to be a bit quot;hypedquot;; hat is, the voicing of certain frequencies seemed to be somewhat exaggerated. That's great if you're looking for that one tone, but if you need to cover a lot of ground, it just won't do.
The PAF and PAF Pro are one of the few DiMarzios that I still use. I have to say that I too find most DiMarzios a little thin on the low end. The more I drop Duncans into my guitars, the more I have realized what I have been missing. All depends on what you're looking for.
I love the SD in the bridge, and PAF's are my favorite in the neck.
It's cool dood, try em' until you are happy. If you are looking thicker, a Super 3 or a CC in the bridge.

my ears have to be way off...
everytime someone describes a pickup, any pickup, as bright its sounds dark to me. Case in point, the JB. I think that thing is way dark. Had it in 5 of my guitars always dark. My Custom in my old Mockingbird is much darker than my DiMarzio in my new Mockingbird. DiMarzios have always seemed brighter to me like some pushed a wah pedal towards the trebel end and left it there. Duncans have always had more beef.
Maybe I'm retarded.

Everyone from Rhodes to Cobain, if I recall correctly.
I had a set in a Telecaster I modified.. loved em! The PAF Pro had such a sweet sparkle.. and super nice with mega amounts of distortion (both were, actually!)

I used to say that.. then.. the state (the lovely state of NY) gave me lots of tests and stuff.. and I can no longer include the word quot;maybequot; in the statement when reffering to myself.
Seriously.
T.Y.E Trust Your Ears. I like both so it's really a matter of tuning your amp to get the tone you are looking for.
