Here's a newb question: How exactly do you make those high pitch squeals and screams with a tremolo system? Sorry if this question is too complicated.

Well, to be anal, it's actually a vibrato. Tremolo is variation in volume, vibrato in pitch. You're best off with a Floyd Rose or similar equipped guitar, and a significant amount of distortion. Then, go for some artificial pinch-harmonics, play around to find some that really ring out, and wiggle the whammy bar like crazy.

Ah alright so it's a combination of pinch-harmonics and just movin the bar to make the strings go up and down for the vibration sound. For some reason I thought the tremolo/vibrato did it all or something, so pardon me for being a dumb@$$ hehe. Pinch-harmonics suck, I was taught how to do them but they're too hard for me to pull off. So what exactly do you mean by quot;artificialquot; pinch-harmonics?

try the harmonics around the third fret.. bridge pickup is usually your best bet, and humbuckers are preferable.. try pressing down the trem arm, doing the harmonic, then releasing the arm.. satriani and vai are fans

Actually I think I might know whatcha mean after Imp told me about the third fret thing. I kinda walked right into that one hehe. Thanks again.

Any harmonic that is not played by touching over the 12th, 7th, 5th, etc. fret (natural harmonics) is referred to as artificial. Try playing the pinch harmonics by moving your pick and thumb around. It takes some practice to find the harmonic node for each fret. Imp's right, bridge humbuckers are best, and lots of distortion will help bring out strong notes.

try playing a natural harmonic with your left hand and your left hand on the tremelo arm too... its a good effect

lol the hours i've spent playing with harmonics, and i cant play that fast to give them impact

uh-weeeee-uh-weeeeee-uh-weeeeeee

Harmonics don´t have to be fast, depending on How you do them...Laiho for example is well known for pulling up quot;Harmonic chordsquot; as slowly as it seems possible.

alas, i wish i had a floyd i'm thinking about picking up a cheap ibanez, i've got a mate's at the moment and i love the speed on the neck.. it'd be a step up in the shred stakes from a strat, at any rate hehe

a quick tip, start off slow and then move faster... try one at a time... then you´ll get the hang of it

Try to find a guitar with a Floyd Rose Original instead of one of the licensed versions. You'll probably be much happier.

You could also change it out for about $200.

Keep rockin'

yep the OFR are far better than the others...

first thing though-practice pinch harmonics alot. I figure it's not worth it to get a kick ass tremolo etc. then not be able to pull off those slick squeals. You could get a very similar effect by simply pinching and bending the note like crazy. Once you get good at pinch harmonics, you could hear them clearly even without an amp.
