I have a Deluxe (1x12) and a DeVille (2x12) and the stock Eminence speakers actually sound really good, especially since I put Svetlana 6L6GC's in both.

But I'm wondering if there are some speakers that could take me to the next level. Here are my criteria:

1) Sweet fat jazz tone on the neck pickup, very Pat Metheny-ish, with highs a bit more rounded -- the ideal combo of warmth and sparkle -- but still able to put out a good classic rock crunch.

2) More headroom -- don't want it to be breaking up when I have to crank the master past 4 at a gig -- so a higher watt rating may be necessary.

3) I also like the idea of mixing speakers for a tone that's very 3D and detailed. This would obviously only apply to the DeVille, unless I bought another cab for the Deluxe.

Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Come on, speaker gurus, let's make this happen...

Bump #2

I'll just keep bumpin'...

I'm a dummy, but people really seem to like Webers with their Fender amps.

i like celestion for 12quot; speakers. i used to run a g12h-30 and v30 in my twin and i was very pleased with it

i have a cannibis rex and its a cool, somewhat dark speaker. its taking forever to break in.

if your amp is breaking up early, put a good 12at7 in the first preamp tube socket. it really helps on those amps

I have done that and it does help. The extra headroom is gravy, just wanting the killer tone, but I'll take more headroom if I can get it. I'm interested in what the Weber folks have to offer -- and am interested in a mix for the 2x12.

Who makes the cannibis rex anyway?

Also, would Alnico be preferable over ceramic for the tone I'm describing? It works that way with pickups but maybe not for speakers? (The stock Eminence speakers are ceramics from what I understand.) How would mixing a ceramic with an alnico in the 2x12 sound?

Ceramic. Just more efficient, cheaper, deeper bass, more definition. Alnico adds to the 'punchiness' and breaks up more nicely.

Can you recommend a good Weber (or other brand) Alnico that more or less fits my requirements then (as much as an Alnico can)? Maybe I'll leave in one Eminence and put an alnico right beside it.

Also, what's typical for the number of hours playing time before a speaker is fully broken in?

I really liked the JBL d120f in my Hot Rod Deluxe and I had similar preferences to you. I also liked the Weber f150, which is similar to the Jensen c12n. A mix of those 2 would be pretty killer, with style and headroom.

Thanks, got those written down in the ol' database. Do the names mean that the JBL is 120 watts and the Weber is 150 watts?

Also, how did they compare to the stock Eminence in the Hotrod?

And again, what about typical break-in time?

I'm with Jeremy: I like Celestion 12quot; speakers and a great speaker will light up the tone of your amp like nothing else.

Either the Vintage 30 or the G12H30 will improve both the clean headroom of your amp as well as the overdriven tone.

One of each would make an awesome improvement in your 2 x 12 DeVille.

And one or the other would be a big help in your Deluxe too.

In an open back cab or combo amp, the Vintage 30 is the brighter and, IMO, louder/cleaner of the two. The G12H30 is fuller sounding with smoother highs, thicker/chunkier mids and more bass.

The Vintage 30 sounds very differant in a closed back cab like a 4 x 12 and sounds alot fuller and bassier than it does in an open back cab or open back combo amp.

Thanks again, but BREAK-IN time, gentlemen...break-in time. Gimme the lowdown....
