Hi folks. I need to have my Screaming Demon's magnets flipped but I'm afraid to mess something up and damage my pickup. I'm used to work on my guitar's electronics but never tried anything like that.

I'll appreciate any advice on that matter, as well as online references you might have... I Google'd it to no result =/

How complex is the process? Does it require any special equipment or tools? Is re-waxing necessary?

Pull the tape up a little on the side and push it through. Flip it and stick it back in. Pull the tape back down and hit it with a hair dryer for a bit.

Why do you flip magnets? ive never heard of this one before.

Because he wants to have the choosen coil humbucking when switched together with a single-coil.
That's an easy way to reverse the polarity of a pickup, when necessary.

This is a topic that comes up from time to time. There was a great thread a few months ago on this. Perhaps we could put it in the vault?

If you want the PRS 5-way switching, you have to flip the magnet in one of your pickups. That's just one example I can think of.

As Inge and I were discussing on another topic, my split humbucker has the same magnectic polarity as the middle pickup in my guitar, and so they don't humbuck when activated together.JacksonMIA, let me see if I got it right: instead of removing the tape from the sides, are you suggesting that I pull it from the bottom to the face of the pickup? Sort of, like, pulling up my shirts' sleeve?

Now the hair dryer bit was the most intriguing of it all... what's the idea? Melting the wax to reaccomodate the magnet?

Yep. You don't have to pull the tape up all the way - just enough for the magnet to clear it. You can take the tape off, too, but it's not necessary.

You're right. The hair dryer just resettles the wax.

i loosen, but do not fully remove the bottom plate ... i also fully unwrap the tape (hang it off the edge of the table for reuse) ... then i slide the magnet out (carefully) ... then i flip it and reinsert it (carefully) ... then i re-wrap the tape ... then i retighten the base plate

That's how I do it too. But I also try to gently pry the two coils up from the base to allow the magnet to pop out and back in easily. (The slug coil is obviously easier to pry.)

This is because I get real nervous when I have to put a lot of pressure on the magnet to get it to pop out. Whatever I'm pushing it with could slip and fatally stab one of the coils, or rip out one of the leads.

If your split humbucker and middle single are not hum cancelling it means you have a wind issue not a polarity issue.

Simular wind direction will not cancel hum, simular magnetic polarity will sound nasal.

Try connecting the coil connection (red/white on SD) to hot (black on SD) and see what happens.

By doing that I'd simply be using the screws side when split. It will humbuck but not give me the sound I wish.

As far as I could undestand from Seymour's FAQ and Qamp;A's, the humbucking effect requires two signal inversions, just like on balanced line cables. If I got it right, the first inversion is obtained by having opposed magnetic polarities, and the second one should be obtained by reverse winding.
