Ok I know this might be a no brainer type of question but I want to read the why for it.....
I’ve owned a couple of Devilles , I recently acquired a 2x12 for a good priced…My thought about these amps has always been that they have a pretty good clean sound, with good amount of headroom, inexpensive…..The bad thing about them is that the OD channel is pretty bad…but nothing a pedal can fix using the clean channel…..I’ve read threads about it and about the Twin reverb….The twin reverb seems to be a better amp although I’ve read post of user complaining about how it does not like pedals (some pedals), other users say that’s impossible…..Now that I have the Deville I am thinking about moving the Deville and get a Twin reverb (at least a silverface one)…..But I don’t want to pass on the Deville just because of a couple of threads.. I want to read about specific comparisons between the two and why one is better than the other…..
These are two great amps, however you should never say that one is better than the other. Tone is such a personal thing. Everyone's taste is different according to their own style and ear. I have owned both of these amps and loved them both. I agree that the Deville (IMO) doesnt have a great drive channel, but I will say that I have heard other people get great tones out of it. The Twin is my favorite of the two. I used to use a TS 9 in front of mine and it gave me chills the OD sounded so good. Also I had my normal setup of a 535 wah and a DL4 Delay and the amp took these pedals just fine.Twins are brighter and chimier than the Devilles and I found that it was a huge mistake putting pedals in front of it that are made for metal. You really need to play the Twin and don't listen to what others say about tone. It's just too subjective. Anyways just my 2 cents.
Thanks for your post..I agree tone is 100% subjective, but you just answered one of my questions though...Twins are a bit brighter than the Devilles...which correlates with what I've heard so far...so I guess I am in the right path....
They sure are brighter, but by adjusting the knobs on the amp and using the guitar's tone knob I was always able to dial in some silky smooth tones. Oh I almost forgot about the reverb difference.... The Twin has more of a lush quot;splashyquot; reverb which makes the Twin my favorite of the two. The brighter chimier side of the Twin to me has always been a good thing. Since I am not a metal head (though I do love to listen to metal) the Twin was great for bringing out the dynamics of a Tele or my Gretschs.
The Twin for most of us is just to loud. At 80 watts it can blow the windows out of most rooms and still reamain clean. If loud and clean is what you are after the twin is it hands down. If you are looking for the same type of clean, but with some natural OD, consider the Pro (40watts w 2 12quot;) or the Deluxe Reverb (22 watts W1 12quot;). IMO the Pro, Super or Deluxe would be a far better choice than the Hot rod amps. The older designs just sound better.
