As you may know (or not) there are replacement fingerboards for Fender necks available... so my question is.. how do I actualle get off the old one?

Get a new neck for a Fender! That is why Fenders are so great as you can replace major pieces like necks. Ya removing a fingerboard is not easy and you mind as well buy a new neck for a Fender but Gibson is a Different story... Saddly i had an old 70's Les Paul with some bad warp to it and over the years the fingerboard had been sanded pretty thin and it wraped again... So i had a good repair shop replace the fingerboard and refinnish the neck after they fixed the problem with the neck.... Something Gibson didn't do right when the glued the neck on caused some pressure to keep wraping the neck. To Get the Fingerboard off they had to use a hot iron to heat the glue up under the fingerboard and then fix the trouble, then make a new Fingerboard with inlay and binding... The Inlays for LP Deluxes and Standards are not avilable to buy after market so they had to make them by hand... To my surprise the job only cost me $500... But the neck is pretty thick and hurts my hands to play it...

Sorry for the German, guys ....

Kannst es gerne mir (Oder Nik Huber, oder ´nem anderen Gitarrenbauer) schicken, neues Griffbrett (Ohne Binding) kostet bei mir 350#8364;. Klingt wie sauviel, aber es wird ja auch der Halbe Hals ausgetauscht, mitsamt Neubundierung/ Abrichtung (sind an sich schon 250#8364;), und das quot;erSchleifenquot; der Wölbung, das sind alles zusammen locker 20 Arbeitsstunden @ 20#8364;. So was wie Binding oder aufwendige Intarsien kämen natürlich obendrauf, ohne Inlay oder mit Perlmutt (oder Ebenholz auf Ahorn-Brettern) Dots steht der Preis

Ich stimme den andern zu, ein neuer Hals käme in den meisten Fällen wesentlich günstiger

LewAMEN to that. You can consider it from a theoretical standpoint, but otherwise, you're asking for trouble. Just buy a new neck-gt; bolt it on-gt; amp; call it a day

I'm not sure of the technical process.. but I know usually you can remove the fingerboard by heating the area (presumably to loosen the glue).

Maybe someone who actually knows how to use this technique could chime in?

Removing a fretboard is not somthing to be taken lightly, but if you do have a fair amount of skill with wood working, then its really no problem. The following site provides instuctions on fretboard removal.

from : localhost/next thing of course is actually getting the next board on, and wether the replacement boards are fretted or not.

Honestly, it'd probably be a bit less of a hassle just to buy a new neck, (i'd say from warmoth, cause they make real quality replacement parts), but if you're lookin to save a few bucks, make sure you know what you're getting into before you take the iron and the putty knife to your guitar.
