first, what exact notes do you tune each string to second, do you need a baritone guitar or is one made for standerd tuning okay

thanks

The tuning goes (low to high) B F# B E G# C#. It's standard down 3 half steps, with the 6th string down a whole step, or drop D down 3 half steps.

A baritone will intonate a little better, but a standard scale length guitar will work fine. People will tell you that you quot;needquot; a bari, but there's tons of dudes using Pauls or PRS guitars for low tunings. For strings, check out the two heavier Ernie Ball sets (11-54 and 12-56).

thanks a bunch

damn, JB beat me to it by 5 minutes.

Hell, I've used that tuning fine on my SG with 10's. It gets a little scary if you go much lower than that, but I haven't had much problem doing drop b.

playing some slipknot, eh?

I've tuned my strat down to B, and it sounded fine (assuming you think single coils sound alright for that low of a tuning).

I used the GHS Zakk Wylde 11-70s though, and dropped the pickups real low so that the magnets didnt pull too much on the limp strings

Yeah man don't worry about a baritone, drop-a sounds great on my 7-string so drop-b should be fine, you should only worry if you're going to G, F or something crazy like that.

my low-e string doesnt sounds like crap until at least the third fret so im just leaving it at drop c. i have like ultra-light strings 46-9 i think so that might be the problem. should be borrowing a ibanez RG clone in a few days so ill try it on that
any more info on drop b would be helpful

B with a 46? Wow you'd be insane, you'd probably be able to pull that across the whole fretboard haha. Get like a zakk wylde 12-60 set and you'll be able to do the b tuning.

Nah couldn't strech any string higher than the d-string off of the treble-e side of the fretboard. I mean damn dude i could of like shot an arrow using the a string for a bowstring LOL

Drop B?

Why?

(shows my age, eh?)

I don't know how you guys can play at all on 10s tuned down 3 steps. I used to play a 13-56 set tuned to Eb. That was a ***** and I couldn't do all that much but even as I go down in gauge I can't imagine 10s in anything but standard. I'd get a 13-56 set and drop that down...worst comes to worst you don't like it.

The guitar I use has the 24.75quot; scale. I've found that I can get away with a 68 for the low A or B, but now I'm use an 80. I'm using a 52-12 set for the standard portion of it.

buy a '12 set, put aside the top string, and see if you can track down a '70 for a bottom string.. that'd put you in the right ballpark, drop B is pretty damned low.. ever considered a 7-string? i have an RG7621, it really simplifies things

when i had a floyd guitar, i'd use bass strings.. you get to the stage where no music shop stocks a bottom e string that thick lol - i use .135 for my 5 string..

Damn man! Are you Popeye or something? I can't imagine what kind of tuning you're in..

It sure does, standard and dropped tuning in one guitar!

okay i just tuned my two bass strings back to d and a
but kept the rest of the strings in relative drop c
this sounds kinda good together for some reason
ever considered a 7-string

yeah i was just thinking about the fact that i only really use the top 4 strings for chords so i could tune those to drop b then have a standerd G B and E string for soloing
