The question is in the title. I'm looking for something to go with a Mesa Blue Angel head. I described the tones I go for in that tone thread posted earlier. Any help would be cool. I would especially like to know if anyone has compared the Recto 2x12, and the Avatar with mixed speakers.

My favorite 212 cabinet is my main one, custom made by a company that's no longer in business out of Pennsylvania, BLB sound. I have it loaded with 2 Emminence 75 watters. Totally middle of the road, works well for everything. My second fave is my 212 late 70s Fender cabinet. It matches my Fender 75 amp, and is totally stock.

I know that Mesa builds really decent cabs. If I were going to buy a 2x12 (which I will soon), it would either be an Avitar or a Splawn cab. The Splawn cabs are more expensive, but not as expensive as a Mesa cab at retail, say at MF or somewhere. You can check them out here..... , great quality and good looks.

Whatever I use, I always seem to end up coming back to Marshalls.

While we are on the topic of cabs and speakers etc. I would like to know what Mesa Boogie Black Shadow and EV speakers are like? If anyone can chime in on either one of these types it would be great.

I think that BA head would look nice on the 2x12 cab I just built myself...looks like a Marshall Bluesbreaker.

my fav 2x12 box would be an old Fender Bassman cab...drop a set of Greenbacks in it or a set of Vintage 30's

Good call! My favorite 2 x 12 is the Matchless Cab I recently acquired. But it's an open back cab. I prefer open back 2 x 12 cabs. Generally, 2 x 12 cabs are to small to be closed back cabs, IMO, and they tend to sound to muffled and tight to me. The Bassman cab is a pretty big cab though...I believe that's also what Brian Setzer uses with a pair of Celestion Vintage 30's. He gets a great sound. Lew

Bogner's cabs are unbelievable! I've always dug Marshall cabs more than Mesa for some strange reason.

Thanks for all the info. As far as the Bassman cab, I already have one of those, but it is too big for the stage I normally play on. I prefer to have my amp kind of in front, to the side of me, so I don't have to get it as loud, to hear good. The horizontal 2x12 cabs (Mesa, Marshall) are usually around 20quot; tall so that isn't to bad, even when the head is on top.

I was actually thinking about getting one of those Bluesbreaker cabs from Mojo, or Vibroworld, anybody had experience with those manufacturers?

I dunno if those cabs are closed back or not though.

my favorite would be 2 eminence legend 125's in a partial open back. Those speakers got some CHUNK!

Go with the Splawn cab. The price is right and if you've never heard his cabs, you won't believe the difference in sound. They're handmade one at a time too, so the quality and craftsmanship is unreal.

I've always preferred the look of a matching head/cab. Anytime you mismatch them, the tolex and grillcloth don't look right together. I'd go with the Mesa cab with exactly the same covering as the Blue Angel head. Just keep your eye on the used market till one pops up.

I have a tall vertical bassman 2x12 from 1968 with the matching head. it seems to be about the size of a VOX 4x12

Gotta have the 2x12 Recto.

the only 2x12 cab i played before is the marshall 1936.
