Hi everybody.

While reading some of the posts on the forum that had to do with alternate wirings for humbuckers, I noticed some users reffering to coil splitting as quot;coil tappingquot;.

My first thought was that tapping amp; splitting are two very different things. You can only split a ' bucker, not tap it.

But then I thought: quot;Why not?quot;

When I play a dual 'bucker axe like my LP, I usually don't use splits.

Additionally, while I love the PG in the bridge of my LP, sometimes I wish it kicked a bit harder.

Why not have both?

Wind a PG as normal, including 4 conductor wiring. Instead of having start and finish wires, wire the white amp; red as taps, allowing you to switch between the normal wind ( ~8.4K) and another, hotter wind (say ~12K).

This would let you choose between a normal PAF sound, and a hotter, thicker hot-rod PAF tone using a normal push/pull pot.

Best of all, it would always be humbucking.

What do you guys think?

I believe the Custom Shop can do that, you'll basically have six wires ( , tap, -, for each pickup)

I think it would be a cool idea. In fact, I once had the idea of making a Stag Mag variation by mounting a pair of tapped SSL-6's on a humbucker plate, with one being RWRP. But a Custom Shop tapped humbucker would be cool too.

Artie

I always thought that would be a cool idea. However, in practice, I wonder if the extra winds would electromagnetically insulate the first ~8.4k, so that it wouldn't quite sound the same as a normal PGb of the same resistance?
