I know that there are several makers using Alnico III in vintage Strat style pickups..and I know that somebody here has tried a set at least once, so what's the scoop?

not as mellow as the A2 ... but not as bright as the A5.

sweet and 3D are the 2 words that come to mind when I think about the tone from mine.

a great inbetween balance IMO

anyway .. thats my 2 cents worth

I learned something about A3 mags the other day. I always assumed that they were slightly more powerful than A2, but not so. They are actually slightly weaker.

With that said, I am going to try a High Order bridge pickup with an A3...somewhere between 8.5 and 9k. No clue about the singles though....I thought Lindy Fralin or someone similar used A3's. Lew would know.

I did some searching on the forum and Dr Barlo and Lew both said that they were weaker and brighter that Alnico 5...maybe I do not want these...more opinions are welcome!

mine are def. not brighter than my A5's .. same w/ my buckers w/ A3 mag ..

The only experience I have with A3 Strat pickups are those from Lindy Fralin. And those definately quot;seemquot; to be brighter than Lindy's A5 pickups. But the A5 pickups have more bass, so that kind of masks the treble a bit...changes the balance. But the consensus in Lindy's workshop is that the A3 at least quot;seemsquot; to be brighter than A5. I had A3 Nocaster pickups in my Fender Custom Shop Tele...they were nice but a little brighter/edgier than I prefer. I changed them to A2 Duncan Antiquitys: much, much nicer!

Sorry am late!

Agree with Lew on this one. The fralin real 54's that I have tried were too weak for my tastes. Lacked that strat bass I am very keen on.

BGlad you could make it Doc...It's good to hear from you! I hope things are well, and thanks for the reply...after posting this, I did a forum search and read what you and Lew had to say about them, and I think I'll stick with Alnico II and 5 for Fender pickups!

If you go over to the bare knuckle site, they love the A3 single coils. They're called Apaches.
