How would you compare these two axes? The SG obviously has two pups compared to the LPJR's one, so I'm thinking it's a bit more versatile. However it's also probably thinner sounding due to the LPJr's thicker body mass. I think of the SG Classic/Special tones and I think of The Who at Live at Leeds or the Isle Of Wight. It sounded like Pete was playing 5 different guitars at those gigs as he manipulated the tone and volume controls to get so many different sounds. I also think of early Santana. When I think of the LPJr, I think of Mississippi Queen and current Green Day. Balls-to-the-wall rock. Haven't heard much cleans from that guitar.

That Live At Leeds tone is what a lot of us Who Freaks would die for.... of course the Modded Hiwatt heads had a lot to do with that sound... The New Reeves amp company offers a Townshend head as does Hiwatt from the UK.... The PT Signature model with all Petes early mods in one box! A guy i know in The Wholigans tribute band says that Hiwatt PT head he bought last year has the WHO sound in it!!! Says it is so much closer then the tone he was getting with 3 mid 70's Hiwatt Custom 100 and 50 heads
Anyway i have tried the new SG Classic and it is not exactly the same guitar Pete was using in the late 60's early 70's... They have a different bridge and the pickups i think are in different spots... But i don't care... i still want the new Gibson SG Classic!!!!!! It is a nice guitar!
cheers.... let us know what you buy..
