For those of you that have switched from Licensed Floyds to original Floyds on your guitars, have you noticed a significant difference in tone and sustain?

I'm building a kit guitar- a korina Kramer baretta, and now comes time for me to get the Floyd- I can get a $50 licensed floyd, or a $160 Original Floyd. I don't use Whammys that much so I'm not too concerned whether it'll stay in tune on massive dives, I was just wondering if the tone of an original floyd was that much better

I like the Original Floyds the best as they are made to last! When i'm building a Floyd guitar it has to be able to take the abuse....

OFR and Gotoh are my faves, the others are too dark and dead for my taste.

OFR's are brighter due to the hardened steel plate, Gotohs are similar. The TRS style ones are usually softer metal.

Schallers and the Edge from Ibanez are made of compressed metal and as a result are more mellow in their tone, however both have hardened metal knife edges inserted into the base.

To answer your question, I haven'e experienced both in the same guitar, but I have a number of different ones and the OFR's are more solid and bright sounding.

Hope that helps!

Trevor

While I haven't really notcied a difference in tone with my OFR and my FR Lic trem, I can tell you that you may have trouble finding replacement parts for a FR lic trem as I did...

I had the TRS system in my Ibanez RG and replaced it with an OFR, and the way i can explain it was that with the OFR it sounded as though i had a new set of strings on the guitar everytime i played it. It's just got that brighter, clearer more defined tone to it.
