Hello everyone,
I currently have a Jackson Kelly Performer w/ floyd rose trem and I love the way it plays but the standard pickups are absolute rubbish.
I play through a Digitech RP-7 valve effects pedal and a Peavy Bandit (at home) and 5150II for gigs.
My setup has a really high end treble sound that I want to tone down alot.
I play a variety of styles, mostly metal. I am looking for a pickup that will deliver more bottom end power suitable for thrash/power metal, and still have good tone for fast leads and solos.
After listening to all the SD sound samples I was thinking about going for an invader in the bridge, but I have been reading through the posts and people seem to think it can get a but muddy and is bad for solos.
If this is the case would a Duncan Distortion trembucker be more suitable? I think it might be a bit more versatile and would sound good playing rock aswell... Would the DD still solve my current high treble problems and still have good lower power?
In the neck I was thinking about going for a FullShred. I am looking for something that makes those fast climbing runs and sweeps 'melt' together, if you know what I mean.
I already searched through the forums and didn't really find anything I was after, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
CUSTOM
this pup has low end growl and sounds great for solo's
dont get the distortion !! too hot !! get a jb or a custom!!
Just for a tone check, Oz Fox from Styper uses Wayne guitars similar to the kelly, with a floyd, with a Distortion bridge and mesa rectifiers and he sounds the way he does...if you can find a soundclip you can decide whether you like it or not. This is their new album btw.
Sweet, thanks for that guys. What about the fullshred in the neck? Anyone have any experience with this in their setup?
How much of your distortion are you getting from the RP-7? If you're using lots of digital gain, you do not need really high output pickups. They just load the front of a solidstate device harder, resulting in more compression and worse tone. If you're looking for a shred pickup that will tame some of the high end in your sound, check out some Dimarzios. Tone Zones and Nortons in the bridge are nice for that.
I'm currently relying highly on the distortion from my RP-7, but I think I will get a better sound if I can use the output on some good pickups and turn the distortion down on the pedal. I hope this way I can get some nice different tones too, not just metal.
Another thing is I have good control over the high end with my FX pedal, but it's hard to do anything with the low/mids. Therefore I hope with the right set of pickups I can balance this out a bit.
Thanks, I will look into those others too...
Dimarzio Super 3 is what you are describing, great output with rolled back highs good mids and great low end. Great for rythm and lead.
I think you'd probably like a Custom/59N set.
