Hi, are there any common modifcations that people use to make their Les Paul more quot;Metalquot; ?

Like heavy string gauge, high output pickups etc etc.

Just that i dunno whether to buy another guitar for drop tunings or whether to turn my les paul into a detuned metal guitar and get something else for standard type tuning.

I'm no metalhead but have played some and I think the LP is a ready-made metal machine...the only mod might be a higher output bridge pickup, and I say might because the typical LP sounds so beefy as is that you might not need one.

Emg 81, Depending on how low you go heavier strings, mullet, long beard, tube socks in shorts and your set to go.

Zhangliqun is right, a LP is already from factory a metal machine also you might want to consider the Epi´s custom LP its pups are way beefy, if some day i´d get LP i would only put some heavy gauge on it.

Zakk Wylde EMG set, Zakk Wylde strings...

EMG 81 bridge, 60 or 81 neck. Wire up a Master volume and no tones, and install a two or three way switch where the neck volume used to be.

Rio grande crunchbox/punchbox set

A FloydRose.

You could get some LiveWires if you wanted something that'd obliterate even EMGs. (warning - may transform your amp into an incendiary device).

Iommi p'ups

JB or DD in the bridge

It depends on what kind of metal machine, but as others have said I think it's pure metal. My flavor of LP metal is a Duncan Custom and 11's tuned to standard or Eb. 9's - 12's, E - B, Custom, Distortion, JB, 81, 85, Iommi, War Pig or Miracle Man pickup will get you there in some flavor.

I WAS being sarcastic. I was actually expecting more of a beating up

Maybe a Custom? It's a beefed up PAF after all, it'd seem logical. For more balls, less subtelty, maybe a Distortion, simply enough. So many 80s sounds were made with LP Distortion (or the DiMarzio equivalent).

I was gonna beat you up some more, but just didn't feel like it

Customs are good... Troy Stetina basically uses a Custom exclusively.

I use a Custom, but i guess it depends which guitar you are using it, coz mine doesnt sound like PAF at all, it sounds pretty metal to me thou... kinda early Metallica and Megadeth sound...

I would leave it as is.

I've got a Custom Custom in mine, very nice metal sounds for me. More sothern/stoner metal though.

I use a Custom/59 in my Lester, but I think a better combo is the Custom/APHII. The SH-5 is a complete beast.

Trade it in for a Jackson Soloist

Calibrated Miracle Man or Warpig set will definitely do the job.
