Can anyone recommend a good 2x12 and tell me how much they go for?

For example, the Marshall and Mesa/Boogie models.

Any others that are worth checking out?

Look into Avatar and EarCandy as well. I got my Avatar cab with a Celestion V30/G12H30 combination for about $310 shipped.

Woah! That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks for mentioning that.

i think someone posted that the new 2x12 marshall cabs are made with particle board or composite board and it's fairly cheap construction compared to their ultimate tone 4x12's.

Anybody chime in to verify?

The Orange and THD 2 x 12 cabs get high marks, although they are closer to $600. I imagine that Bogner makes a good 2 x 12, too.

Depends on which series. I'd be surprised if the MG cabs weren't particle board. OTOH, I believe the upmarket cabs are still plywood.

I think the 1922 cabs are/were still plywood. They go on eBay for anwhere from $300-$400.....and IMO you still need to change out the speakers. If you go Avitar you can get just what you want for $300, and know it's built better. For a little more you can get a Splawn Cab, which is one of the finest made cabs I have ever seen in person. Amazing quality.

1 for avatar. Quality cabs and great customer service.

1 for Avatar. I've had an Avatar 2X12 for 2 years now and am extremely happy with it. I got the option of the removable back panel....so I can drop in either the open or closed back panel depending upon my need. I had two V30's put in it which I really like, though I'm considering dropping a G12H out of curiosity. For the price, you can't beat the deal. Same quality without the brand name on the front for alot less money.

Avatar cabs are cheaply made and they don't sound that nice from what i've heard. Check out Mojotone. I just got an all birch Mojotone for quite cheap. It's tiny (speakers are even mounted diagonally on the baffle) but it sounds HUGE.

Hmmm,, that's the first bad review I've ever heard on an Avatar.

I saw one that a guy got in, and the speakers were front-loaded. They came that way from the factory. Does Avatar front-load all their speakers?

The Carvin Legacy 2x12 and 4x12 cabs are quite good. Good contruction and Vintage 30's

2 for Avatar!

Although I don't necessarily recommend Avatar, I DO recommend the V-30/G12H30 combo. Not only does it give incredibly pleasing tones with both speakers combined, but you can get a pretty interesting range of recorded and live tones depending on which speaker you mic. I like to use the V30 for the brighter and cleaner side of things, and I like the G12H30 for when I want grindy/creamy rock tones.

Any others that are worth checking out?Well it looks like I finally found a buyer for my 4x12 which means I will also be going the 2x12 route so I can downsize a bit for portability. I think I'm gonna go with another ( had a few before... ) Mesa 2x12 rectifier closed back cab with vintage 30's but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for starting this thread.... saved me the work of doin it...

the avatar 4x12 i had the speakers front loaded. the avatars are great for what they are and how they are priced. theyre great giggable cabs that will take a beating if u get the right covering etc. i recommend a mad sound or mojotone cab for home use, but for gigging theres nothing like a cab u dont have to worry about beating the **** out of cuz its only 150 bucks. plus...the avatars WILL take quite a beating. i recommend them.

a front loaded cab has some tonal advantages over back mounted. some drawbacks as well tho. im too lazy to explain.
